We got up early, 6am and had breakfast then off to the Atherton Tablelands the trip is best done by car we drove from Cairns along the Gillies Highway and be warned there is a section of winding road we had a lot of fun on (depends if you like to drive). We drove our furthest point first, that made... More

The Atherton Tablelands is scenically very beautiful and has absolutely stunning swimming locations. If you are seeking safe swimming spots during the summer months when stingers frequent the ocean then this is the place to come. Lake Eacham, a volcanic crater lake, is absolutely exquisite for swimming. Lake Barrine serves the best devonshire tea with a spectacular view. Millaa Millaa... More

We visited here to do some family history research and some exploring. And there's plenty to see from volcanic lakes to mountains; open grazing lands to thick forests and everything that is great about country Australia. We only spent 1 day exploring this area when we really needed 2 or 3.

We went on a tour of the area. First we went to Lake Barrine Tea House where we enjoyed Devonshire tea with freshly baked scones then went on a boat ride around the lake. It was enjoyable and didn't take more than half an hour. We then went to Milla Milla Waterfall and enjoyed a refreshing swim under the falls.... More

Have relatives in this area and have been visiting for a number of years. Would recommended driving up from Cairns via Smithton and the Kuranda Ranges, stopping at Barron Gorge and Kuranda, up to Mareeba, Atherton then back to Cairns via the Gilles ranges, stopping at Malanda, Lake Eacham and Lake Barrine. There are plenty of tourist attractions, scenic views... More

Best to do a circuit from Cairns, up the Gillies Range to Lake Barrine for morning tea, then to Lake Eacham, Malanda, Atherton, Mareeba, Kuranda, down the Kuranda Range and back to Cairns. Magnificent views, plenty of places to stop for coffee or lunch etc. This drive will take you 4-5 hrs with stops but there are many more attractions... More

Lots of great things to visit and places to stay. Milanda dairy, Kuranda,Tinaroo dam, Lake Barrine and Eacham are just a few reasons to visit the area. Great scenery everywhere.

The Atherton sits atop the Cairns tropical coast and is a variety of climates from the very dry around Mareeba to The Misty Mountains themselves. The Atherton pub is worth a visit - fully lined in Silky Oak and with a staggering array of single malt whiskeys ... not that I had more than 6 or 17.

The scenery is very different from a lot of Australia. It seems more European. Fascinating landscapes and beautiful waterfalls. Not to be missed especially for the great dairy produce.

So many attractions, out of the way up-market cafés, natural wonders and historical collections. I have recommended many places to friends and family and they have loved the Tablelands area also.
