Escape the summer heat at one of Cairns' best known landmarks, the Esplanade Lagoon. Set on the Cairns foreshore overlooking Trinity Inlet, the 4800 sq metre saltwater swimming lagoon offers locals and tourists a year round safe swimming location. Saltwater is pumped from the inlet and filtered through a state of the art filtration and chlorination system, to meet Australian Standards. The kids can enjoy the sandy edges, build sand castles and play in shallow water. On the other side of the Lagoon, visitors can lounge on the timber decks in moderate shade. Shady trees, landscaped gardens and open spaces all contribute to the leisurely atmosphere on the Esplanade The Lagoon is open 6am - 9pm Thursday - Tuesday, Midday - 9pm Wednesday all year round. While you are on the Cairns Esplanade why not check out the Cottage Industry Market, 8am - 4pm every Saturday, in the Plaza just next to the Lagoon. Why not enjoy the weekend's live music featuring local bands with the stage set up next to the Lagoon. The Cairns Esplanade also boasts Beach Volleyball Courts, Bouldering Park, Skate Park, BBQs, Active Living Fitness Classes, Muddy's Playground, Funship Playgrounds and so much more, all free for casual use. Come along and enjoy!

The artificial lagoon with a nice layout is a very large outdoor pool with sandy ground/beach, and is just steps from the ocean and the boardwalk.

This spot is central to Cairns shops and restaurants. Great lawns and shallow pool looking out over the bay which appears to be an endless pool. Plenty of space on well manicured lawns to sunbathe

This huge free lagoon style pool with beaches for the kids, lifeguards for safety and grassy areas to hang out in is a great asset for Cairns. As Cairns has no beach and is very muddy and tidal this huge pool ensures there is somewhere...More

Lovely location. Great vibe. Surrounded by beautiful gardens. Good facilities. Situated in the centre of the waterfront attractions and right across the road from the Esplanade pubs and restaurants.

The place is huge my kids loved the size of it, the council should be proud of what they've created as it draws huge numbers of visitors and brings in lots of tourists

We spent the afternoon relaxing here, they had life guards on duty and plenty of space to find your own spot to relax. The water was clean and offers depths for babies through to adults.

The Swimming Lagoon is man made and on the Esplanade in the centre of town. Great for a swim. Safe for the kids and life guards are on duty when open. It's free, very clean, BBQ factilites, change rooms, and plenty of grassed areas to...More

This is a beautiful pool in a lovely location. The sandy 'beach' area is perfect for small children, with some overhead shade provided. The deeper areas make the pool usable for those of any age. The infinity view to the estuary is a great touch....More

This is ok for a swim. The facilities are excellent and the showers are hot, lockers and bbqs are available too. The water is quite cold...and there was rubbish floating in it. Quite frankly you can't complain, it's free and peaceful.

In June the beaches are safe as there's no stingers. Tobruk public pool is a few kms north of the lagoon. Crystal cascades is a lovely spot to swim but probably a bit cool on June.
