About
The Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) is a single institution located across two adjacent river-side buildings in the Cultural Precinct at Brisbane's South Bank. QAGOMA holds a collection of historical, modern and contemporary art, and stages a dynamic program of Australian and international exhibitions. We are home to the Children's Art Centre which collaborates on interactive artworks with leading artists from around the world, and the Australian Cinematheque, the only dedicated cinema facility in an Australian art museum. QAGOMA operates its own retail outlets and cafes and restaurants, proceeds from which support the Gallery.

Some great spaces and always a nice mixture of pieces from the permanent collection and interesting/challenging temporary exhibitions. And a great cafe with a lovely outside seating area. The individual rooms are well set out. There is a helpful introductory tour by one of the museum's volunteers. The only disappointment was that some rooms were closed for preparation for a forthcoming exhibition. Always full of quality art, two highlights for me on my recent visit there was the large Monet painting 'Waterlillies' full of luminous colour and impressionist marks of paint, and secondly the Shirley McNamara exhibition. Ms McNamara's expresses her art in creative basketry using spinifex grasses, bird's feathers, and riverbank finds,(and other sculptures) highlighting her identity and place as an indigenous woman from north west Queensland. A must see stunning free exhibition.

If you like art, don't miss the Queensland Art Gallery. For me as a non-Australian it was a great introduction to Australian art, including indigenous Australian art. The Australian collection is comprehensive, and there's also a section with international and European art where you find many classics such as Picasso, Joan Miro, Toulouse-Lautrec, etc.
Great thing to do while you're checking out the South Bank and it's free to visit.

I was very fortunate to take a volunteer lead guided tour of the Australian Art section of QAG and saw the beautiful “Under the Jacaranda” painting by R. Godfrey Rivers from 1903. Take one of (or several of) the free tours. You’ll really enjoy the peace, the beauty, the history and the serenity of QAG...them head up the hill to GOMA. The galleries are really pleasing totally ages...3 to 103. Enjoy this Brisbane highlight and thank me later.

During our visit, staff at the entrance were very helpful and welcoming. We enjoyed viewing the early artworks and what was remaining of the Triennial exhibition. Unfortunately, the international works were not accessible as recent storm and water damage had closed these rooms. We will return next time we’re in Brisbane. Recommended.

I usually prefer art galleries that feature works from past masters but have to acknowledge that the displays in this gallery were eyecatching, particularly the indigenous and Asian art. However, before viewing the galleries, we were confronted by Boomerang , an imposing assembly of 270 000 crystal pieces, described as "a waterfall-style chandelier" by Chinese-born artist Ai Weiwei and suspended over the water in the QAG Watermall. Elsewhere we were enchanted by the Shrine of Life by artist Vipoo Srivlasa, the Bull by Kathleen Shillam, the marble figure of Lucretia by Giacomo Ginotti and wondered at the work "Heirloom" ,by Philippine artist Rocky Cajigan, which incorporates human hair collected from salons over a period of months. We considered the painting "Bradman bowled Gilbert 1989" a poignant reminder of the contrasting fates of two cricketers from different cultural backgrounds.

This contemporary art exhibition is a splendid cross-section of over sixty projects from artists in the wider Asia Pacific arc. Not only are some of the works masterly in skill and technique, but they are also deeply confronting as the true history of European invasion of Indigenous lands emerges in several of the art works. The reckoning holds lessons about the past but also hope of more opportunities for exposure to mainstream society demonstrating culturally artistic expression through paintings, photography, sculpture and other methods.
The astonishing gateway to the Triennial is the installation “Boomerang” by the sublime Chinese artist, Ai Weiwei. An astounding piece of work composed of 270,000 crystal pieces cascading like a waterfall and shaped like a boomerang. This alone is worth making a visit to the Queensland Art Gallery compelling for anyone with an interest in visual splendour.

After being told to wear my small purse (which is made to be work on your back) different ways by different security guards…the first whom talked over me and refused to listen to a word I said and the second that contradicted the first and scolded me like a child in front of other visitors, I left. First time visitor and won’t be returning. I guess it’s safer to hold a swinging purse around art exhibits than on one’s back where the chance of accidents happening is significantly less 🤷🏻♀️ Common sense did not prevail in this instance.

Beautiful surroundings, inside and out. A range of contemporary and more classical arts, always showcasing First Nations artists as well. When the weather is nice, it’s lovely to pair the visit with a spot of lunch outdoors in the café.

A nice place to visit on a rainy day. Enjoyed seeing the historical works - national (e.g. Brisbane River in colonial times) and international. Also some way out there contemporary works. Particularly liked the Japanese exhibits such as the historical screens and ceramics (with a comparison to early 1900s Lalique glassware). Admire the 1903 painting Under the Jacaranda. Free entry. Includes gift shop.
