Well we actually visited in 2013 and this is a very late review but the place is so beautiful that I had to come back and write this one. It's a short 45 min or so boat ride from airley which is a backpacker town on the east coast of Australia. The place has beautiful blue waters and there are boats taking you to the island for boat trips. You can choose a party boat or a regular one depending on your interests. Meals are usually included in the package. Once at Whitsundays you have ample time to swim and snorkel. In fact they give you the option to go snorkelling on the way where there are some corals . Must do when in the area.

What a marvelous and memorable experience! Our holidays in Whitsundays have provided us with ultimate satisfactions, for which we visited Great Barrier Reefs, as well as Whitsunday Islands in one trip. With Great Barrier Reefs as 1 of the 7 Natrue Wonders in the world, and Whiteheaven Beach ranked among the top 10 beaches of our planet, holiday in Whitsundays is highly recommended by me. Regarding how to organize the trips, I wish I could offer some assistance: Transport --- A. Flight: There are airports in Proserpine, and Hamilton Island. B. Train: Spirit of Queensland running between Brisbane to Cairns along the Queensland coast, stop at Proserpine. C. Cars: Driving to Airlie Beach. Accommodation --- A. Airlie Beach: As the departure point of many Day tours, it is a pretty Seaside Resort Town with beaches, parkland and many shops. Great for families. B. Hamilton Island: Served with an Airport, a wildlife park, shops, and as the pickup point of Day tours, this beautiful island is most favorable among young adults. C. Daydream Island: With regular ferry services to both Hamilton Island and Airlie Beach, it is gaining popularity due to its heavenly beautiful settings. With a living coral pond and a Aquarium, Daydream Island is perfect for family with kids. D. Taking a multi-days tour on one of the tall ships for sensational exploring experiences. E. Hayman island, etc,: if it will not be your first trip to the region. Hope you could enjoy your holidays just like we have had.

My first visit to the Great Barrier Reef was an exhilarating one. The sea plane ride over the greener than green coral reefs and whiter than white sandy beaches cannot be compared with any other. The only regret was that we couldn’t land on one of the beaches due to high winds.

Visited Saturday 22nd September. You need to include the Whitsunday Islands on your list of things to do and make sure you allow time to go for a walk on the white sand or a swim in the clear blue waters while you are there.
