Boring. Qantas Museum expensive. Everything is expensive. Accommodation limited and expensive. Was looking forward to a cheap steak or lamb but just as expensive as Gold Coast. Save your dollars and go to Bali

I use to live in Longreach and have been back many times to one of my favorite towns. Unfortunately this trip I found the people working in the tourist attractions to be rude and very unfriendly. I saw many instances of older visitors being treated badly. I doubt if they are locals, more likely people employed from outside the town for the high season. I drove away not wanting to return.

OK it's a small outback town. This review is only to warn of an arrival after 1 pm if you're looking to eat. We arrived on a Sunday just before 2PM, and despite advice from the hotel, we found that NOTHING is open for food after 2PM on Sunday, until dinner time. Google may say otherwise, but when we rocked up they were closed, or closing. I don't know what the other days of the week are like.

Longreach is one of the big ticket stops along the Matilda Way mainly due to 3 attractions, Stockman‘s Hall of Fame, the Qantas Foundation museum and School of the Air. All these attractions are worth a visit and to see properly you will need at least 2 days.

Yes, a lot of grey nomads and oldies on tours come out here but it is also educational and a lot of fun for families with kids too. All the big attractions you already know but if you can afford it the local tours including Outback Pioneers tours are such good value and authentic.

If not for COVID there is no way in hell I would go to longreach. A hot dusty drive dodging Roos , road kill and flocks of birds and sky high fuel prices.

Accommodation, food and attractions are ridiculously expensive.

But

Qantas founders museum is amazing (dammed expensive), outback attractions are good and there is heaps to see and do and we have totally enjoyed the experience

But

For the same cost I could do three weeks overseas in a five star hotel after departing from the Qantas club and not driving.

A great attraction but not cost comparative compared to OS

I was pleasantly surprised by Longreach. Most of the people I met were helpful. They gave me information about places to see - other than the big obvious ones, e.g. the Qantas Founders' Outback Museum. There were the little places, e.g. the Railway Museum and the Power House Museum. They also recommended places to eat, especially when some popular ones were still closed because of decreases in custom as a result of fewer people travelling.

There's an interesting well kept cemetery for people interested in such things. No one but a council care taker was there for a litle while when I called in. There are markers placed near graves, mainly of historic significance to Longreach.

The end of winter is a good time to visit. I'd go back, but not in summer - too, too hot, especially if you come from the coast!

Had to include longreach into our itinerary again as it’s a special and favourite outback town of ours. Some great tours, attractions, shopping and friendly people in this drought stricken area. We’re pleased to be able to help the locals a little by sharing some of our funds amongst them.
