No trip to Sydney is complete without seeing an opera at the Sydney Opera House. Opera Australia performs at the Sydney Opera House January-April and July-November every year. Opera Australia also performs at Arts Centre Melbourne and on the Sydney Harbour stage. Most performances start at 7.30pm and run 2–3 hours with an interval. There is no dress code. English translations are projected above the stage for all operas sung in foreign languages. Selected operas in the season will also have Simplified Chinese translations (Carmen, La Traviata, Opera on Sydney Harbour and Aida).

Last night I took my partner to his first ever live opera performance at the Sydney Opera House. All-in-all, a superb ensemble performance, with fantastic revolving sets, full of drama, intrigue, and all the qualities of humanity on display in one of Verdi's most popular...More

I heard Verdi's Rigoletto in July with Dalibor Janis and Irana Lungu (dir Elijah Moshinsky) and was literally spellbound. The settings, the seating, the acoustics were all excellent and the singers really 'connected' with the audience and gave a genuinely heartfelt performance. Wonderful experience. My...More

This was one of the most powerful opera performances I have seen and I highly recommend seeing this incredible production. The stage is almost bare but the lack of set makes the focus on performance of the singers more intense. Jessica Pratt and Michael Fabiano...More

We watched a show, walked around the area, visited all the stalls and had a meal. Bought some fashion items and just took in the architectural wonder.

My wife and I loved the experience of watching the opera outdoors in Sydney. It's a wonderful setting, with the opera house as a backdrop - and the production was technically very good: good cast, great orchestra, good staging and impressive effects (especially the snow!)...More
