Neighbourhood: Central Business District
The Sydney Central Business District is abuzz with energy. Power brokers run to and from high rise buildings and after-work drink places, high-end shoppers tour venues like the QVB, and fine diners frequent the many celebrity chef restaurants. For a dose of culture, walk to the NSW Art Gallery, or visit the Sydney Museum. To escape the hustle and bustle, reconnect with nature at the Sydney Botanical Gardens or picnic lunch at High Park. No matter your interest, be sure to check the full calendar of events hosted by the city, from the Sydney Festival in January to October’s Good Food Month at Hyde Park.

Great Gala, Opera house organisation dire
The Opera Gala on New Year’s Eve was absolutely fantastic. It was a pity however that the audience were more interested in securing a space to see the 9pm fireworks than appreciate the work and effort of the performers. Many also did not dress up, especially tourists who seemed to be the vast majority of the audience. Sadly the Opera house did nothing to discourage this and frankly the organisation at the Opera House on the night was simply dire! This did not impact a great Gala!

Orpheus and Eurydice Opera - Masterful - Could definitely see it again.
Opera - Orpheus and Eurydice. What an amazing night. An unexpected riveting experience watching the gymnastic antics of the Circa against the Gluck underworld themed music. Our breath was taken away with some of the moves of the Circa. A new meaning to the ‘Writing on the Wall”. Magic effect. Excellent oratorio and orchestral performance enhanced the evening. Highly recommend for a surprise evening.

Fabulous Performance in an Awesome Setting
We loved seeing La Traviata at The Sydney Opera House. Samantha Clarke has a fantastic voice. Her performance as Violetta was truly magical. The staging and scenery were wonderful. We definitely would recommend seeing this fabulous opera.

West side story performance at Handa opera.
We saw the West Side story musical at Handa opera. The place is outdoor, so Friday performance was canceled because of terrible weather, however we were lucky to get out to Saturday. The view on stage and Sydney opera house with budge behind is amazing. Musical was really nice. Staff sings and dances beautifully. Music is great. It was real enjoyment.

Going to see thi show was one of the reason for our 3 night short stay holiday to Sydney. Set on the magnifient Sydney Harbour with a stunning backdrop of city lights and fireworks just before interval this is a truely spectacular setting.

We travelled to the venue via water taxi from a pontoon located next to the entrance to the Botanic Gardens, a short walk past the Sydney Opera House. Single adult ticket price was $15 but other options included bus, taxi and ride share to the venue enterance. We were unaware of these and had chosen to walk to the Opear House expecting the performance to be close by - it is not.

We booked a return water taxi and were very happy when the return trip dropped us at Circular Quay, which reduced our walk back to the hotel.

NOTE there is quite a walk from the water taxi drop off point to the venue which includes several flights of stairs which may be a challange for people with mobility issues.

We booked mid priced seats (still $284pp) in C block half way up. These provided a good view of the stage and we saw everything. Note that seats at the extreme left of stage in blocks A and B would have poor sight lines and therefore are a lot cheaper.

HINT book isle seats if you can as this will help existing the venue at the end of the show.

The set is amazingly simple but effective and the singing and dancing wonderful, as you would expect from such a renowned company. This rendition is faithful to the original version and worth seeing. However I doubt younger children would be entertained and the price is high compared to other shows I have seen.

I note that as the show started people from the cheaper seats simply moved across to the vacant more expensive ones and nobody tried to stop them, so you might get luckly. Showing till 21 April 2024.

It is a privilege to see one of the best musicals ever written in this spectacular harbour setting. Nina Korbe as Maria is outstanding with her haunting, operatic interpretation of Bernstein's music and Sondheim's lyrics. The whole cast performs with energy and raw talent that never lets up from the get go to curtain time. A timeless interpretation of Romeo and Juliet, made more vivid by being performed by this company ; it's worth flying a long way to see this production, so get yourself the best possible seat and enjoy this unique experience.

The setting and talent were excellent! We had Platinum access during the interval which was worth it mainly because of short lines at the restrooms. I’m not familiar with going prices for such shows as it’s my first time in Sydney, but it seemed expensive. The only zero star is the exit. There is little thought given to evacuating a crowd. For older folks or those with mobility issues, I do not recommend this venue.

Bad seats, bad acoustics and too loud. How they can sell seats in rows A and B is a joke. You will end up with a sore neck as you’re lower than the stage. Seats on the left or right of the stage will also need to contort themselves onto an angle just to see anything. And the seats are rock hard. The singing was way too loud and distorted the lyrics. We’ve seen this show twice before in theatres and thought this would by a unique experience. It was, for all the wrong reasons. Left at the interval. Not good at all.

A generous average for opening night of The Magic Flute. I'm still thinking about the non- traditional approach and the director's interpretation vis a vis Aussie culture and remain somewhat baffled as to why and how it seemed such a mess at times; but they got thru it with some wonderful moments of acting. Weaker was the setting, at times just tacky and poorly conceived, especially with the lighting being distinctly weak and uninspired. I'm not sure their work was finished by opening night.
Bravo to the leads, the kids, and the puppery moments
A backstage tour several days later revealed some of the issues facing anyone trying to create in such a severely cramped space, play within decibel limits the orchestra must meet, and suffer the limitations no wing space and the use of ceiling pieces place, on lighting in the 21st Century. Seeing part of the set for La Traviata assembled onstage makes me wonder if I would attend another production.

We were disappointed that this was such a low budget production in one of the greatest opera houses in the world! The orchestra was minimal. There was no set or scenery, just a tacky gold tinsel curtain that was pulled back-and-forth across the stage. The singers were OK but not outstanding. The cast and chorus were dressed in street clothes, and barefoot (presumably so they didn’t have to buy shoes.) It was sung in English which was disappointing. I didn’t care for the way Papageno changed the words & character to portray an Australian beach bum. Frankly, our college production was superior this.
We expected a much higher standard, especially after spending $350 per seat in the loge section!

Do not purchase right wing seats for the show. Most of performance happened on RHS which is the complete blind spot for right wing audiences. I could only hear the music and bunch of meerkats throughout the show. Please check your ticket, if your seat is in right wing, you will see what I saw.
