The whole river area is gorgeous. Very untouristy and laid back. The Brooklyn area has a number of small cafés and the local ferry to Dangar is enough to make it worth your while even if you aren't visiting friends.

A get out of town place, the whole of the Pittwater area is very beautiful, take in Palm Beach, Whale Beach and the light house. Johanna's Restuarant is great, expensive but you could visit the bar.

They're all beautiful. We were staying directly across from the wharf. But you can walk all the way around the island and pick a good position if o my going for the day.
