A neighborhood with a Greenwich Village vibe, Newtown is a great place to stray from tourist traffic and duck into funky clothing, books, homewares and tea shops housed in Victorian-style buildings. The plentiful cafes and restaurants along King Street have earned the roadway the nickname of 'Eat Street.'

Scratch Darling Harbour and The Rocks from your itinerary and put Newtown on it! King Street is one of the most vibrant and exciting streets in Australia, and it just happens to be located in one of the nation's most open and accepting communities. Newtown has some of Sydney's best (post-lockout) nightlife. It's also got dozens of cafes, restaurants and... More

Sydney is known as a city of villages. Newtown is more the trendy/hip variety. With many shops, cafes and restaurants accomodating the needs of its specific clientele. It is fun to walk along the main street (king st) taking in the atmosphere or dining al fresco, people watching.

Still has that different appeal that distinguishes it from the tourist and "toney" suburbs that mainstream seem to like. Such diversity, lots of shops, though not many franchise type; and a good variety of restaurants.

Newtown's not for everyone, it's the antithesis of the North Shore and Eastern Suburbs. If those places feel more fake than fabulous to you, then Newtown might be what you're looking for. Newtown Station is in the middle of King St and it's worth exploring the street in both directions. Don't miss the even hipper Enmore Rd. There's a wide... More

Newtown is in itself an interesting suburb, and has what can only be described as one of the longest shopping strips in Sydney. King street and Enmore street combined have over 600 interesting shop fronts, many dating back to late Victorian times which adds to the charm of this historic town. King street is well-known for the large number of... More

A good place to visit if you want to get away from some of the more touristy places in Sydney. Easy to get to by train or bus; not far from CBD. Numerous restaurants and cafes including many cuisines, notably Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Italian, Greek, Lebanese, gourmet burger, frozen yogurt, coffee, chicken & salads, organic, vegetarian, pies, seafood,... Newtown is full of the weird and wonderful, and that's just the people! A real mix of all Asian cuisines meet true Aussie pubs here, stretching down the whole of King Street. Great Pubs with hidden courtyards and rooftop bars. BUT beware of the lockout laws. The rules are so strict you can be abruptly interrupted and asked to leave... More
