If you have time, it is worth going to see the famous Bondi beach, especially on a nice day. Even if it's too cold to go swimming, it is fun to watch the surfers. Lots of bars and restaurants near the beach.

I don't know when the calmest conditions are but my girls swam in mid June (which is their winter) and they didn't think it was cold.
