Architecture tours of Sydney.

The Sydney Architecture Walks explore ideas through architecture offering an interface between architecture and the wider community. Each route is driven by certain themes and ideas and attempts to decode the city whilst stimulating new ways of thinking about and seeing Sydney. On bike and on foot we trespass joyfully across disciplines and genres as we seek out the projects that respond to the culture, history and environment of Sydney and not just imported formulaic codes.

It is more a standing than walking experience as the tour only covers about three city blocks, with a very knowledgeable guide (a trained architect) giving information about the history, topgraphy, geography and geology of Sydney and the effects it has on the architecture. Fascinating facts from why buildings are elevated on stilts and have no lower floors and how... More

I've been on three of these walks and I've learned so much about my home city! The tour guide gave me really in-depth and yet broad information, so I have a much better understanding of why the city is how it is. The style is casual and friendly. Brilliant!

I think this trip is very suitable to those who are very interested in Sydney contemporary architecture as well as architectural students or architects who want to know about Sydney better. Eoghan is very knowledgable and his explanation is very vivid. He is very kind to answer us all kinds of questions. I will take another walk someday.

A remarkable telling of the Sydney Opera House story: the rare competition and the rescued sketch that won it, the architectural inspiration, the language of the building and the engineering challenge, the prototypes and details, the dramatic sequence of the building's spaces, the Picasso mural that almost was, the finishes and interiors that might have been, the provincial politics that... Eoghan Lewis combines history, aesthetics and good yarns to weave a multi layered impression of some of the key buildings of Sydney and how they underlie the fabric of the city. My city was illuminated and I learnt more in 2 hours than I knew previously. I thoroughly recommend this tour for locals and overseas visitors alike.

Eoghan is an inspirational and engaging speaker - able to communicate his passion for architecture and the social, cultural, and environmental history of the city he so obviously loves. Utzon's Sydney Opera House design is an underlying thread of the Tour and it is impossible to come away without sharing Eoghan's respect for this beautiful building. I can't imagine a... More

Perfect Sydney autumnal morning for the Utzon tour and "she" (the Opera House) was sparkling in all her glory, matched only by Eoghan Lewis' glittering commentary. Passionate, inspiring and intelligent - clearly Lewis loves his subject and the breadth and depth of his knowledge is extraordinary. This is no "ordinary" building and this is no "ordinary" tour. Should be compulsory... More

What an incredible way to spend a sunny Sydney afternoon. We chose the SAW Bike Tour 2 which covered the Surrey Hills side of the city. A beautiful bite to eat before the tour at the Pit Stop cafe where we also hired our bikes…then a delightful tour for 2.5 hours which flew by. HIGHLY Recommended!

Thanks so much for your generous comments mavmetropolis. That tour was actually 3.5 hours long so it must have REALLY flown by! ;-) Eoghan More

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
The Sydney Central Business District is abuzz with energy. Power brokers run to and from high rise buildings and after-work drink places, high-end shoppers tour venues like the QVB, and fine diners frequent the many celebrity chef restaurants. For a dose of culture, walk to the NSW Art Gallery, or visit the Sydney Museum. To escape the hustle and bustle, reconnect with nature at the Sydney Botanical Gardens or picnic lunch at High Park. No matter your interest, be sure to check the full calendar of events hosted by the city, from the Sydney Festival in January to October’s Good Food Month at Hyde Park.
