Walsh Bay is a special part of Sydney Harbour area. We have been here a number of times and like to walk around enjoying the views as well as going to the theatre. There are several restaurants and cafes in this area as well as apartments in amongst the theatres and other points of interest. The wharves used to be in operation until some years ago until the face of the district changed to what it is today. The views are great too! Highly recommended.

Originally Walsh Bay meant the area from Dawes Point to Millers Point. Nowadays it mostly from Wharf No1 to Wharf No 9. Yachts are still anchored at the wharves, once busy with trading, exporting wool and importing other goods. There are still the unique timber wharf and shore edifices and adjoint overpass bridges above Hickson Road. They provide access to the upper level of the shore sheds. The ones busy harbor now just as sedulous, only isn’t with coming and going ships, but with visitors, going the famous Sydney Dance Company, or to Roslyn Packer Theatre, or the celebrated Sydney Theatre Company , stylish restaurants and bars, or just sauntering around and marvelling the restored wharves in the Walsh Bay complex that is possibly be the only surviving in the world from this type . If you do nothing else, just explore this charming art area and sit in a restaurant for a coffee to watch out for the crowd around you, admiring the waves of the bay, the fantastic structure of the timber wharves, you already have had a nice, relaxing but interesting day.

We included the wharf redevelopment as part of our Rocks walk (separate review) mainly to appreciate the history and the architecture rather than the cultural offerings. It's a lovely spot with great original equipment that has been left standing at spots along the boardwalk, with explanatory panels about the operations and history of the place.

Walsh Bay (western side of harbour bridge) precinct is well worth the foot leather.
It flows logically from the Rocks...
An intervening mixed-use precinct (sydney theatre, offices, cafes, restaurants homes and pubs) adaptively redeveloped with some art and imagination in the 90s/00s from its old wharfing past, providing an organic segue-way en route to Barangeroo headland park.
Good in all seasons, and a much quieter quayside vibe than the city.
Fave cafes? Pier 8, Zuppano's, and pubwise the good old Lord Nelson. (Beer brewed on site)...
Hidden gem food place? The roof top bar at the Palisades Hotel. Bandstand view down over the Barangeroo area and across to Balmain etc . Menu? Anything seafood ...& the crazy Brussel sprout dish. Not exactly cheap but one of the best views in the city...straight up the river...gets busy.
As for that new Barangeroo headland park...very pleasant stroll. all those levels and paths and steps. Each one a post card. The modern western counterpoint to the far more heavily visited Lady Macquarie's Point round to the east at Botanic gardens.
Not bad. Thanks Mr Hickson and Mr Engineer Walsh for fixing up all those sea walls and building all those wooden finger wharves to stop the rats spreading the plague a hundred years or more ago. Good job.

This area was once wharves and warhouses and is in development as an arty area with restaurants and theatres and trendy housing and apartments. Worth a stroll from the Barangaroo Reserve to the bridge.

We took our time walking through, having come from Barangaroo and heading to the Rocks.
There were lots of plaques telling you of the history. Did you know we sent 14 year old boys to war in PNG on boats in WWII?
There was plenty of original and restored evidence of how this was a working harbour.
Take your time and enjoy the history lesson.

The new park at Barangaroo makes Walsh Bay a good option for getting between that area and the Harbour Bridge. There's not a lot amidst the piers of the bay apart from the theatres and a growing number of restaurants helped along by the new apartments and offices. The old Millers Point area towers over it on the hill and there are a few stairs and overpasses to link them.

We were staying at a hotel close by in The Rocks area of the city. We so enjoyed walking down here and strolling along the waterfront. There are some good restaurants and there is a very pleasant atmosphere about this place.
