We were fortunate enough to spend time with the McLeish ‘Family’ at the McLeish Estate. Wonderful hospitality and wines. Amy was very informative with the wine tasting.

I had a lovely experience here and it was so easy to lose track of time

I am writing a review here so as to leave some tips for any future visitors/ tourists wishing to visit this amazing wine country.

Firstly, if you are staying for more than 1 day it is advisable to hire a car as taxis charge through the roof and to the moon and back for their services - ubers are also usually unavailable. So please keep this in mind 😋

You can easily do tours by yourself and there is accommodation right in the heart of pokolbin, where all the wineries are. - My preference would be The Mercure.

However, there are some wineries outside of the main centre of pokolbin, although these are also only a short drive away.

If you do opt for a tour I would recommend Vineyard Shuttles - very good prices and wonderful, highly knowledges staff making a wonderful atmosphere for all.

Please visit Peacock Estate - they were by far my favourite Estate owned by the most wonderful & friendly people

It is located near the Crowne Plaza and well worth the visit!

If you do tours by yourself, you can do tastings for $0-$15 for a full list of tastings - and as I said, most of the estates are right in the heart of pokolbin and within walking distance.

I definitely recommend a visit to the Smelly Cheese Shop - the one on Roche Estate seems to be the main one and there’s a few really nice eateries in there as well ☺️

If visiting the Cheese Shop, please try and get your hands on the French Truffle Brie - it’s by far the best cheese there is and is orgasmic in your mouth 😍

All in all HV is a great place to visit and was a wonderful experience for me.

There’s plenty of things to do there, so don’t fret for running out of things to do!

There’s plenty for the whole family, including: Horse riding, mini golf, helicopter tours, HV Gardens and sweet shops for the young (and young at heart 😉)

Everyone needs to take the time to visit the wonderful Hunter Valley only a 2 hours drive from Sydney. THe amazing variety of wonderful wineries providing wine tasting allows visitors to experience the great taste and variety of the wines on offer. sadly many now charge a $5.00 tasting fee which is redemeemable if each person in the group purchases a bottle but if you are traveeling in a large group like we did, 8 people, it's unrealistic that every time you visit a winery that you are going to buy 8 bottles of wine just to taste a few eye glasses of wine.

Hi 54Aussie Thanks so much for your review of the Hunter Valley. I understand a lot of wineries in the Hunter Valley and other wine regions around the world now charge for wine tastings at the cellar doors. The charge is to cover the cost of the wines you are able to taste at the cellar door. Most wineries will give you an extended wine list to choose from if you pay the small fee. Its reasonable to assume guests can taste up to 10 wines at a cellar door, so that equates to $0.50 per tasting. The Hunter Valley produces mainly boutique styles of wines, not the massed produced types and most businesses are owned and run by families or small companies. They have to cover the cost of the wine they pour for the guests tasting at the cellar door. Its one of those things... if you were to walk into a restaurant and try the food before you ordered a plate, you would expect to pay a small fee for the opportunity to taste before you buy. We really hope you visit again one day and that the tasting fees charged don't deter you from enjoying the experience. Best regards Heidi - Heidis Hunter Valley and Bella Farm Country House

Every visitor should venture to the Hunter Valley. Its an amazing spot and the locals are so friendly. We stayed at Chateau Elan and it is 5 star accommodation. You are greeted by the lovely Keith who is very passionate about his job and hotel. The staff at the concierge are very helpful. Our room was titled Prague and it was perfect it had a view out to the golfcourse. Now you can go on many bus wine tours but we decided to go on our own journey. Where we discovered some amazing wineries and wines of course. We ventured to First Creek amazing reds, Moorebank Winery a family owned business such a great family and of course wine and condiments the best sauce for pork ribs ever, Vinden Estate best Semillon, Audrey Wilkinson what a view lovely Rose, Keith Tulloch simply stunning and wines to match, Usher Tinkler in a old church beautiful sparkling wine and of course Petersons a sentimental favourite for us with the most to die for dessert wines. We needed another couple of days to try the other wineries which we will endeavour to do. We visited the smelly cheese shop, chocolate factory . and had lunch at Two Fat Blokes. We also had an amazing dinner at Amanda's Restaurant. We only went for 2 days and we fitted so much in. Please support the Hunter Valley its a wonderful place to stay or visit you surely wont be disappointed. Loved it.

This made for a lovely weekend away from Sydney. Traveling with three small children, we were somewhat selective about the wineries we visited but all the cellar doors were very welcoming to the kids (and the adults enjoyed some spectacular wine). We coupled the trip with a stop at Soldiers Beach on the way back to Sydney and it made for a very refreshing weekend outside of the city.

An interesting 2 1/2 hour drive from Sydney. Not being familiar with how to leave Sydney meant a long peak hour drive north. (We came back on the toll roads and it was much faster!! ) The roads were mostly highways so quick and efficient.
The Hunter Valley has many wineries and lots of accomodation to choose from. We tasted lots of wines - my favourite winery was Tulloch with a delicious paired food and wine tasting. 💯
It’s a very dry winter but the beauty of the Australia bush remains outstanding. Definitely a great weekend away.

Had a beautiful time here for my sisters wedding. We stayed for three nights and the wedding was on a Monday. I’ve never been to a wedding at a winery before and it was beautiful.

We took a private day trip tour to Hunter Valley with Mike from "Go Beyond Tours". Mike is very accomodating as we planned the trip to our needs and required timing, which still takes roughly 8-10hours. The trip began with a stop at the Reptile Park with interesting mix of animals and their very friendly staffs made the trip memorable. Afterwards Mike ensured we had a good place to have halal lunch and a place to perform our mid day prayers. While most people would go to Hunter Valley for wine tasting but all is not lost for those who dont drink as the view there is simply spectacular. Furthermore there are other attractions like learning abt how the grapes are grown and how wine is made. There is also a stop at the Hunter Valley Chocolate Company and another stop at the Hunter Valley Olive Center that sells besides olives, many types of home made jam and sauses. It was an interesting shopping outlet for souveniers. All in all we enjoyed the private tour to Hunter Valley. Thumbs UP!!
