The National Zoo & Aquarium is privately owned and Australia's only combined Zoo and Aquarium. That's 2 attractions in one! We are situated on around 7 hectares of land just five minutes from the centre of Canberra. With a wide variety of both native and exotic animals, as well as the largest inland saltwater tank in Australia, there is something for everyone. Wander in and have a casual stroll around the park, or make a day of it with family, friends and make use of our picnic areas and complimentary BBQ facilities. Our Animal Encounters provide visitors with an opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the worlds most amazing creatures!

The Zooventure Tour was an unforgettable highlight of our trip to Australia. Our guide Danni was extremely knowledgeable about all the animals, and it was incredibly exciting to get up close to so many amazing creatures, including some that we had never even heard of before. We got to feed sun bears, giraffes, elands and one of the tigers, and... More

Went to the zoo for a Meet A Meerkat Experience but spent most of the day there. It is only a small zoo on limited land but the layout cleverly disguises the size and ensures each twist and turn present new sights. The animals on exhibit seem to be of fewer variety than past years but this is somewhat offset... More

After the steep admission price, one expects to see a few more animals in cages or at least have access to a majority of the animals that are on display. Sadly, there seems to be more focus on addressing the night motel experiences of high paying guests than the mid day visits of grandparents and their families. A tiring and... More

Hi Ian M, sorry your zoo visit didn't live up to your expectations - but if you came to see animals in cages or forced to be in a "display area" purely for people to see - then ones expectations are misguided. Some of our animals are rescued (like the Sun Bear) and many others are part of endangered species... More

Fabulous Mothers Day breakfast at Jamala Lodge at the National Zoo and Aquarium in Canberra this morning. Champagne/juice/tea/coffee on arrival. Wandered around the spectacular lodge, sipping our drinks and enjoying the artefacts. Big bonus was getting up close to the snow leopards and hyenas, with the female white lion popping around while we were eating breakfast. Breakfast was served in... More

We loved our visit to this little zoo. Arrived 1.5hrs before closing and virtually had the place to ourselves. Very well designed so that visitors follow a pathway trail through the zoo. Enclosures designed with many viewing points to see the animals (so you don't miss out if Mr Tiger is favouring the back of his enclosure today). Couldn't believe... More

I note a lot of complaints in the reviews, and I've decided you're either a zoo person or you're not. I found it easy to follow the numbered trail, so that you didn't miss an animal, it wasn't an exhausting effort to get around, and the autumn colours in the trees made it quite a beautiful place to spend a... Thank you Wendy L for understanding that zoo animals are NOT peforming circus animals! One of the main reasons modern zoos exist is cater for the welfare and comfort of the animal as a priority, while enabling the public to see them (and sometimes interact with tme) in as natural surroundings as possible. Animals do sleep, and hide and eat... More

It's a very small zoo which would be suitable for families or people with smaller children. While it was 'ok' i won't be rushing back in a hurry. The entry fee of $40 per adult far exceeds the value of the visit. Only highlight was my friend could see a tiger close up which he really enjoyed. Other than that... More

Hi sophie r, yes, we are a slightly smaller zoo than than the major capital cities such as Sydney and Melbourne (hence cheaper entry and free parking) - and we are the perfect size for a easy and comfortable visit for a few hours or more. Glad your friend enjoyed seeing the tiger up close. More

An excellent zoo offering close up encounters with a wide range of animals. The zoo is suitable for all ages and levels of fitness as it is big enough to host a diverse range of animals but in an intimate surrounding.

Once a month the zoo runs a photo tour behind the scenes with local photographer Irene Lorsberg. We went into the area still under development and had the opportunity to pat the rhino before exploring the new area, which included maned wolves, cheetah and rhino. A fabulous morning of animals and photography before the zoo was open to the general... More

I like the accommodation where you can stay overnight in the zoo. There are opportunities available to interact with and feed animals prior to the zoo opening. I loved the experience of feeding the bears, tiger and other animals. I had a close encounter with a cheetah which was a highlight.
