    overall a great visit
Parliament house is an excellent building and the tour we attended was also excellent, the shop was extremely disappointing, it does not cater at all for a budget traveller......also does not cater for all the school children on their trips from interstate for spending a bit of their pocket money, only a key ring or magnet, the shop is almost bereft of anything except high market items and not much range there either. We had WA visitors recently and they were only able to see 2 of 3 Canberra's sights so could not go elsewhere to find a small item in memory of their trip not including key rings and magnets, maybe beanies, shopping bags, mugs etc would help a budget traveller !!

A ‘must see’ place to visit when in Canberra.
It is always an amazing building to visit. Parliment House is architecturally a beautiful building, filled with many historical items to view. Certainly a ‘must see’ place for anyone visiting Canberra.

    Australian Parliament House (Canberra)
Simple but elegant parliament house. Very clean & well maintained. The red & green halls evoke that feeling of “battle of Australia’s lawmakers.” This is a welcoming experience seeing the heart of Australia 🇳🇿❤️
We're glad you enjoyed your visit!

Parliament House: Highly recommended for all ages.
We took the free tour. Outstandingly excellent, a really top notch volunteer guide, ex-defence, clear, succinct commentary, very knowledgable. Highly recommended, especially if you are short of time. We are locals, and this will be top of our list to take visitors to.
Thank you for your review! We're glad to hear you enjoyed you free tour at Parliament House. We'll pass on your kind words 😊

    Impressive tour
The parliament and senate chambers, historical portraits, large size letter of apology by the Australian government 🙂 as well as the general building historical stuff, made this tour interesting for me. It was my first visit to the new parliament house and my tour group had lunch at the cafe there. The cafe has alot of options and I ordered the pumpkin soup. The venue was quite busy with groups, individuals as well as families visiting. Myself being an A grade ace achiever as a history student, I managed to take a lot of pictures for my collection / travel memories. Enjoy.
Hi there! Thank you for sharing your review and images with us. We’re glad to hear you enjoyed your visit to Parliament House and had a great experience at Queen’s Terrace Café.

Parliament House is an amazing building
Parliament House in Canberra is an amazing building. Parliament House is the seat of the Federal Government. It houses the House of Representatives and the Senate. It's very clinical, I doubt that staffers who worked in the Old Parliament House would have willingly move to the new Parliament House.

    Australian Parliament meets
The new Parliament House was built to replace Provisional Parliament House, which opened in 1927. It was only meant to be a temporary home for the Parliament. By the 1980s the Parliament had outgrown the building. Building of the new Parliament Building started in 1980 and Parliament House was officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1988. Parliament House is one of the largest buildings in the southern hemisphere and it cost $1.1 billion to build. It was designed by Mitchell,Giurgola and Thorp Architects and this building is impressive. It has been built to blend with the environment. You cannot help but be impressed by the marble foyer. There are tours of it at a reasonable price and if you are in the Capital... you should make time to do one of these tours. I visited here recently with a group - it's not my first tour, but every time you tour this impressive building you will learn something new... or have an Ah-huh moment where you remember something you were told once but had forgotten. Another interesting thing to note is you pass people who look familiar to you... but it's not that you know them, you have simply seen them on news broadcasts. :)

    Great free family activity
Took the whole family on the short tour and everyone enjoyed it. They had a good activity book for the kids and the short tour was enough of an introduction for the little kids. We enjoyed standing on top of Parliament House. Recommend going early before it gets busy.

Nice, Old Parliament Building is Better
The New Parliament Building, opened in the 1980s, was a bit of a disappointment for us. When I visit a historic government building...I expect an old building with lots of history. Well, this is the NEW building. Lots of history has been made here as well as more to come...but it's a very modern building. The good news is that once you get through security you are pretty much free to roam about. With some additional screening you can watch parliament in session if that's the case. We did the paid, guided tour "Best of Parliament". The tour guide was very knowledgeable and nice. Rather than go here, though, I recommend the Old Parliament Building. That one is just as accessible but has a lot more history, artifacts, etc
Thank you for visiting Parliament House. While Parliament House has been operating for 35 years, the building was designed to last 200 years! So we can expect a lot more historic events to take place in the building. We’re glad to hear you enjoyed your tour and we’ll be sure to pass on your kind words to the Visitor Services team 😊

I did the Yeribee tour which I had pre-booked for free online. It was really interesting if you enjoy First Nations experiences. I also looked around the two houses and it is great you can just wander around. There is of course security to go through at the entrance but it is free to come in and have a look.

Our visit here followed on from attending the Museum of Australian Democracy.
The arrangements were a little strange. On entry a guide spoke to us for two or three minutes and then told us to look around the building for ten minutes and to then return to the entrance. No other information was forthcoming.
On return to the entrance we were asked to follow a specialist guide named Mike. He was excellent as he took us to the House Chamber and various parts of the building and clearly explained their significance since its opening in 1988.
The building is architecturally interesting and its terrace has a fine view down to Old Parliament House.

Beautiful place. Incredible architecture. The best for me was the interior design inside the parliament.

There is a gift shop inside the parliament & it's way too expensive.

Please come down in the prices

It's so wonderful to be able to have free entry into the centre of decision making within a country. I went during an Open Day so I had the pleasure of being able to see the whole building, normally part of the building is closed to public visitors. Aside from being able to go and see all the politicians debating in front of your eyes, going to see all the exhibits in the Parliament House are definitely worth it. It is a mini museum within itself. There are so many artefacts of significant historical importance to Australia in the Parliament House so it such a delight to be able to see them such as the table on which Queen Victoria wrote the letter to establish the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. As well as that, the terrace cafe serves really good Australian food and is reasonably priced.

I enjoyed being able to talk with the staff of the Parliamentary Education Office. They are really friendly to talk with and are happy to help you learn more and understand how Australian democracy works better.
