The info and explanation added by the light display on the model of Canberra really tell you the background to the place and is very interesting. Great views of the lake, good information with very helpful staff and good souvenirs. The only downside was the cafe. Potentially great with view etc. But the service was so terribly slow that I... I stumbled across this accidentally on my first afternoon in the city and was glad I did so. The exhibition gives a good overview of the history of the city and how it was conceived. There is an interesting automated exhibition which explains the concepts behind the triangular theme on which the city is built and shows you in lights... More

We recently visited the National Capital Exhibition and Canberra and Region Visitor's Centre which is situated on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin at Commonwealth Park. In the Visitor's Information area, we were able to browse and pick up any interesting destination leaflets of things to do in the Canberra area. There are friendly staff available for help or information... More

This free attraction is situated overlooking the lake. It chronicles the start of Canberra's design and construction. Perhaps more could be said of Walter Burley Griffin, but the various displays are fascinating. There are Lego toys for kids, seating for parents and a coffee shop for those who need regular sustenance. Parking is convenient and free on weekends.

Whilst this is a great exhibition on how Canberra came to be created, I would miss it if you are short on time. It's not really one of the "must see" places in Canberra, but it is free, and has lots of hands on stuff for the kids, and a fun video of how Canberra was developed.

A good place to spend an hour or so and see that the people who chose the design for Canberra got it right. Some of the options are more than a little worrying. With the way the road system is laid out in Canberra, coming here shows why its been done the way it has and it all sort of... More

Comprehensive collection of the works of Tom Roberts including the absolutely enormous Oping of Australia's First Parliament. All the old favorites are there - bailed UP, Shearing the Rams etc. Takes about 2 hours to do justice to the collection.
