NGA is a free gallery in Canberra and worth visiting definitely! The gallery is on the lake and has some lovely gardens and sculptures. It's a peaceful place with lovely grounds. As usual the café is overpriced but that happens at tourist places. The James...More

An interesting collection of national and international treasures. Can't do everything in one visit, which leaves things to explore for next time. Good spaces, great curation. Just don't stand too close to the Jackson Pollock Blue Poles if you want to avoid being told off....More

Well worth revisiting - and a must if you haven't seen it. The current American Masters exhibition has been well designed to highlight the Gallery's interesting modern American art collection, including Pollock's Blue Poles - and it is free. Picasso's Vollard Suite is exceptional. There...More

What a rare treat! Another spectacular exhibition in the Capital topped off with a meander through the permanent collection. Will return again and again.

This is a great national collection largely brought together over the last 50 years or so. A very generously proportioned series of spaces, special exhibitions and the regular galleries, all reconfigured in the last few years. Not so big as to be overwhelming either. And...More

Mindblowing virtual reality exhibition, and then got lost in art deco halls followed by Monet's lilies. So much more to see....

Like many of the major "national buildings" in Canberra, the NGA's design is brutalist, austere and conceived on an impersonally grand scale. It feels more like a Warsaw Pact relic than an appropriate place to house Australia's national art collection. It also manages to be...More

Compared to Melbourne and Sydney, the collection is less exciting and the building is more conventional. If you are in Canberra anyway, why not drop in for an hour. Nicely presented Aboriginal art, a great Pollock, Rothko, Malevich, a Monet waterlily piece, a large sculpture...More

We took two hours. Earlier was better. But start of the day was very busy. Half an hour after opening. Do some reading before hand, it makes it even more interesting.

Often busier on Saturdays and with Floriade on, I would expect that it is more busy than usual
