Went up to the monastery on a bus from Rethymno and was greeted by a sister who kindly showed us round and talked in good English about certain interesting aspects of the place, while she was noisily chewing gum! Beautiful building of the main church and lovely little gift shop with items made by the sisters. Great view from the raised yard of mountains and the city and sea far below. Well worth a visit if you like that kind of thing.

Such a beautiful Monastery on the top of a hill. Because of the heat we did not prepare to cover up knees and shoulders before we went, so luckily for us the nun lent us some fresh light colored blankets to cover up as a sign of respect when entering the holy grounds.
I never thought that I could experience such quietness and calmness in a monastery but the heavenly mix of the orthodox look, traditions and the genuine and friendly Nun made the hole experience delightful.
I am going here one more time when I travel back to Crete for sure.
The Nuns also made homemade Oils, soaps, lotions etc for you to buy if you want homemade products. Bring cash!

Stunning location, this nunnery is a place of peace and prayer. We were shown around by a very helpful nun who spoke good English. At the end of our time here we purchased some very tasty liquor from the nun's shop... homemade quinces liquor. Lovely.

If you are one of those who like to walk and enjoy the countryside, the monastery is located 7 km outside Rethymno, up on the hills.
Enjoy the splendour of nature and come to a real paradise, a place of purifying harmony, beauty and peace.
You will come across deserted watermills, take Theotokopoulou Street, pass from Evligias hill with the fine tree forest and the road will lead you to the Monastery of Nuns which happens to be one of the oldest in Crete.
Two more kms will lead you to the village of Mili, where you can get down to Mili gorge and the old settlement.
Taking the gorge to the end, it will lead you back to the coast of Rethymno.

When you arrive at the Agia Irini Monastery at Kroussonas you are filled with peace and with a violent history of the past. The defensive system that the priests and countrymen of Kroussonas fought against the Ottoman Empire is reflected in its walls and small museum. A place to remember.

We were met by one of nuns on arrival who spoke very good English and showed us around the church explaining the recent restoration of the site by the current inhabitants. It is a very quiet and peaceful place well worth the trip up to see it. The onsite small shop sells gifts made by the community to raise funds for further restoration work.

Agia Irini is one of the stops on the Rethymno City Tour open top bus. It is a restored nunnery with a community of resident nuns. An English speaking nun showed me around and told me about the icon of St Irini in the church which has allegedly helped many women wanting to have a child. There is a gift shop with very good quality merchandise made by the nuns. After showing me round the nun left me to sit quietly and rest and to take photos.
I found this place to be very spiritual and peaceful with lovely views across the hills and towards the coast.

Hello,
End of August, we intend to visit Agia Irini Monastery which is one stop of the Rethymno city tour drop on/drop off, but do you know the visiting hours of this monastery? It seems to be closed from 1 to 4 pm, but we are not sure. Thanks.
