About
Just 15 km from Heraklion, at the historical village of Krousonas is located the Museum of Greek folk music, musical instruments, research and documentation with the characteristic name "THIRATHEN" ( thyrathen pedia = classical education education in Byzantium who had secular nature). In a renovated traditional house, where the sounds of nature pollinate the traditional instruments and spawn ever insuperable melodies, reserves to the visitor a trip to the charm of the music. One of the purposes of the museum is the local society's acquaintance with Greek traditional music in its entirety and its familiarity with the traditional instruments initial of the local ones, and then those of the neighbouring countries. The Museum's ambitions include the emergence of a cradle of culture through a variety of festivities and actions based on traditional music. An additional goal is the creation of the center for research and documentation of our musical tradition.

The museum owners combine running this museum with other related work so check on opening times before visiting, give them a call. When you do get in you will receive a personal tour and a demonstration of some of the instruments. Great collection with passionate staff.

Tradition and roots came alive here today in a most original and amazing setting of one's home made into a true museum, where past and present fell into one. The session is easy and clear to follow keeping my six year old attentive throughout whilst I wanted to know more too. It's a must to visit for music lovers and those who love how history weaves connections and brings talents together. Live music is played, a showing of dance and an opportunity to try out some steps and have a go at impro too! More so, opportunity for amazing local produce is available after the session as well as Greek hospitality with snack bites and raki. Remember your cash card to get yourself or loved one an extra treat! Well worth it. And it's located up the mountain Psiloritis! Which has a history of its own... Just brilliant! Sadly my camera phone ran out of storage so I have no photos to upload... Better still, go and see, listen and learn, marvel in its awesomeness. Enjoy!

It has been a wonderful experience to visit this museum. My purpose was to discover the music instruments of Crete and recognize their value in the culture of the island. The museum informed me about this and also made me feel the unique hospitality of the region. For this, it is an excellent choice to visit for people who are exploring the island and are willing to learn and spend a good time on their vacation.
