Tilbury Fort is possibly the finest example of a bastioned 17th Century artillery fortress in the Britsh Isles.

Today visitors can visit the original Guardhouse, Chapel and Gatehouse buildings as well as the huge eighteenth century gunpowder magazines. You can also explore the Victorian underground magazine passages and imagine what life was like for a gunner in the late nineteenth century.

There is a free audio guide, museum, exhibition and gift shop. Hot drinks and a range of light refreshments are available in the shop. There is an indoor seating area in the old Guardhouse and picnic tables and benches outside.

Important to read all the information or you will miss some of the historic events that happened here. Might be a big hard to find on public transport. Great views and walks along the walls along the Thames. There is also a ferry across to Gravesend. English Heritage place, well worth a visit.

We recently went to the Fort for their gun firing event and what a brilliant day, it was our first visit and was a family day which included my elderly parents and grandchildren, the organisers had so much for everyone young and old, and the respect and time given to my father was so touching. I would like to take... More

I & friend ended up visiting Tilbury Fort as it was recommended to me. Being an English Heritage property, and having annual membership, it was worth a visit easily done in 1-1.5hrs. Not having a car, we readily caught a train to Tilbury Town station, from London (less than 30mins journey time). Form the train station, you can either catch... More

I visited this fort with my grandson who thoroughly enjoyed himself. He could run around the grounds where there were fantastic views of the river. We also took my dog who could also run around on her lead - there were no restrictions as to where she could go. It looks like you could do a lovely walk around the... More

Came here as somewhere different to the stately homes and castles I normally visit. Was an interesting site, with hundreds of years of history. Place has a calm feeling to it and on a sunny day it has lovely views. Staff were friendly and happy to recommend points of interest not to miss and didn't hard sell. Tea and coffee... More

Impressive fortification and features are well laid out, grounds well kept. Views from higher vantage points impressive (clearing raised sea defences). Power station down stream a blot on the landscape! Great history, well explained in displays. Audio tour marred by lack of numbers on features corresponding to index - we went wrong turning right instead of left after 2! Choice... More

Visited Tilbury Fort after signing up for an annual subscription to English Heritage, and thought we would visit something locally. Staff on the entrance were extremely helpful (particularly Paul) and gave us some great tips. Definitely take the audio guide as it gives you lots of interesting history. Free parking at the site and it's dog friendly for dogs on... More

I had not realised there was a fort at Tilbury and have definitely been missing out. I thought a sunny afternoon would be ideal but in fact needed a full day. The fort is an English Heritage property and is open Wednesday to Sunday. It is much larger than I thought it would be and with the headphone guide I... More

Really great place to visit was here for over two hours, children loved it too! Would recommend the audio and the really nice gentleman on the desk was very informative and welcoming, didn't realise this place was so big! Had a great morning here. Wheelchairs r accessible but bumpy in quite a few places

A pleasant drive to get to Tilbury Fort. The staff were very helpful. We were a little disappointed with information provided on site and found the audio guide confusing. There is so much history here that could make this centre an amazing day.
