- ynguyThe Hague, The Netherlands148 contributionsThe One Castle To VisitIn Calvinistic Netherlands this castle stands out in its luxury. The central hall is amazing. The gardens are large and very inviting, allowing for the weather, for a picnic. If one only does one castle visit in NL then pick this oneVisited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 30 October 2023
- Lenny HAuckland, New Zealand921 contributionsStunningWhat a spectacular example of a restoration project. Amazing! It is by far not the oldest castle you can visit, but it is so worth a visit - even on a miserable day. Lots of well-informed volunteer guides are stationed throughout. The gardens are beautiful, including in the middle of winter.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 14 February 2024
- Clasina29Amsterdam, The Netherlands230 contributionsRebuild castle with gardens.Beautiful place to go. Rain or shine. No expense was spared when this castle was reconstructed. The details are wonderful. We took the 16:00 tour, if you can go earlier do so, we felt a bit rushed with going through the castle. There is so much to see, it’s nice to not have to rush before the castle closes at 17:00. Gardens/park are also worth the visit. There is a maze at the rear of the garden. When the beechwood are full in their leaves it is a challenge to fine the swan.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 15 April 2024
- Debbie VBovenkarspel, The Netherlands104 contributionsBeautiful restored castleFar exceeded our expectations. Beautiful grounds and an interesting restoration of the castle showcasing just what money can buy. The volunteers in each of the rooms were keen to share their knowledge and wit (In several languages) The only slight downside was the booking process. Having only decided to visit that day I went online to book tickets but there were no time slots available for the castle. I then telephoned to ask about availability on the door but was told that there was nothing available. I then booked tickets just for the grounds but on arrival found that I could purchase tickets for the castle contrary to what the lady on the phone had advised. Would loved to have had a drink and a bite to eat but both of the cafes were full to bursting.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 May 2024
- Ariyya478 contributionsExtravagant castleThis castle is quite interesting as an example of what is possible when the owner has a lot of time and money on their hands. The architecture and furnishings are exquisite to the point that your eyes will blur and you don't know what to look at. The gardens are beautiful too especially during spring season. I'd just warn that people who are claustrophobic might find the narrow stairs and basement area hard to visit as it's a small enclosed space made of solid stone.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 4 July 2024

The volunteers are very knowledgeable and can tell you about the role in history and significance this castle and its owners played in shaping Dutch society and surrounding area. Great place to have an indoor and outdoor experience. You are able to also visit the beautiful city of Haarzuilens nearby.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 30 July 2024

We greatly enjoyed the tour of the castle and learning of its history. Truly the guides in each room are what make the tour. The crowd was small on our day, so we had these folks to ourselves for many minutes of questions and stories.
The grounds are amazing, It would be neat to see if they open up the chapel in the future.
We took an Uber to the site and a taxi back to city center Utrecht, the costs were nearly identical.

We usually visited this castle with our guests, two or three times a year. But since 2020 it was not possible due to the situation. Nowadays there is no more lockdown in the Nehterlands so this castle is open again and still follow the protocol, though. There is a lot of activities during the year and favourite wedding location. It is beautiful in every season, not only the castle but also the estate. The rose garden in the summer and It has many kind of mushrooms in the fall. Castle De Haar is my favourite castle and really recommended if you visit Utrecht or Amsterdam.

Not easy to get to but well worth the effort if you can. This was one of our favourite places to visit on our recent trip to Amsterdam. The castle exterior and interior are spectacular. Friendly approachable guides are in each room to answer any questions you may have. Would be great if they opened the chapel to see the interior.

It's terribly sad that only the pictures of the gardens when they are blooming are published. In winter everything is dead and the beauty of the gardens is not visible. I was at different times in the castle De Haar with clients. I would like to point out that the prices are very expensive 19 euros to visit the castle and if you want to visit only the gardens the cost is 8 euros. I would like to point out that during the winter the gardens are not inviting, the gardens in the winter should be free, they are far from being as beautiful as in the 4 months of flowering. It is not recommended to visit the castle during the period when the gardens are not in bloom, it is a waste of money..

DO NOT book this unless you have a private car or book a package with transportation. We read the information and chose to go by taxi or Bolt from Utrecht which was supposed to cost about €25-30 each way. When we got to Utrecht no car would accept the fare and it was too late to use public transport. We didn’t ever get to castle. We immediately contacted the booking service - GetYourGuide - who was “very sorry” but couldn’t give a refund. At the time we booked we didn’t see any packages with transportation included. Do not buy the castle tickets alone!

We had high expectations for the castle. It’s a 45 min. commitment out of Utrecht to get to it, so we planned most of the day. The outside and gardens are beautiful! The inside is moderately interesting, but the lack of interpretive information in English really limited the ability to appreciate it. The audio tour on the app had exactly one segment in English and the rest in Dutch. And that segment was just someone reading one sign. You are limited to seeing less than 1/3 of the castle and the chapel is off limits.
They’re very proud that Roger Moore stayed there. And while I like Roger Moore, that’s not the historical information I’m looking for. Not sure if I had to do it again I’d commit all the time needed.

Great interiors, interesting history, very friendly staff. Even on a rainy, autumn day, the park was really charming. The little cafe at the tuinhuis is a pleasant place for a coffee or lunch. Very tasty! The whole place is ok for visiting with kids but you have to be careful in the areas close to water (basically everywhere…).

This castle is surprising from many perspectives. It is the largest castle in the Netherlands without ever being associated with the royal family. It also incorporates many different architectural styles. An example of capitalistic extravagance in a simple-living country. Worth a visit from a socio-cultural viewpoint.

Can you walk the grounds and not go in the castle? If so, do you just pay parking?
Written 1 January 2020
You can walk for free up to the main entrance (and stables) where you buy the tickets, but if you want to go to the castle itself or walk around the castle gardens (or both), then you need to buy tickets for that. There’s also a combi ticket if you like.
If you go by car, you pay for parking.
It might be handy to buy an annual museum card if you plan to go to multiple museums during the year. You can buy the museum card at the entrance of museums and you have a month to activate it with a Dutch address and a photo, but you can still use it as soon as you buy it without registering it to you. So for tourists, you can use it for a month and after that, you need to register it as above if you like. If you never register it (with an address or picture) then I believe it will expire after a month or after a certain period)- the exact terms can be found on the museum card website.
But it could still be worth it, if you plan to visit multiple museums within a short period. There’s a list of participating museums also on the museum card website.

This place is possible to get to via public transport, however, it would not be an easy trip and would probably take too long to be worthwhile. Depending on your starting point, it would be trains and buses or just buses. If you are seriously thinking about visiting I would suggest you take a train to the nearest stop and then take an UBER.

Hi..can i use Amsterdam regional travel ticket for this trip?! Thank You.
Written 19 June 2019
The Kasteel is not really close to any rail stations that we saw. If you are a bike person try the suggestion about renting a bike. There may be a bus stop somewhat closer. I would recommend UBER. Train, Tram, Bike, Uber, drive in that order.
