Getting here was quite the experience - I followed Google Maps, which probably took me on a strange route, but it got me there eventually! Lots of twists and turns, but absolutely beautiful every second of the drive. This lookout was great, I was fortunate enough to have the area all to myself and the weather was beautiful. The only reason I rate this 4 starts instead of 5 is that I think there may be more impressive lookouts in the Douro Valley — but I’d still recommend making this lookout a part of your road trip.

The hill of S. Salvador do Mundo, the Old Castle or Ermo, had its first occupations in Prehistory, mainly from the end of the 4th millennium BC, the Late Neolithic period. The viewpoint of São Salvador do mundo is located on the left bank of the Douro river which is the Douro Demarcated Region an area classified as World Heritage. Also considered as the largest sanctuary of the Alto Douro, it is constituted by a set of chapels that stand along the hill, and who are dating back until the XVI century. At the bottom of the mountain you can see the “Valeira Dam” and the historic “Cachão de Valeira”, famous for being the site of Death of the Baron of Forester. When arriving at the location, you have place to leave the car, but you can also continue a bit uphill by following the narrow street, and here you can try to park the car before the fence? From here it is steep uphill for another 200 meters.

Steep narrow cobbled roads that seem like you should be on foot, but once at the top its a view to remember. When the light rain started, the trip down (on a different but just as hairy drive) meant that you were too shaken to do the boat trip or wine tasting at the bottom. Food however, was available, and very good. Glad we did not eat efore the drive up.

Miradouro do Sao Salvador do Mundo is a lookout located, where is the church of Sao Salvador, near a little town called Sao Joao de Pesqueira, in Douro Valley, in the North of Portugal. Here you can see wonderful views of the Douro River and their meanders. Really, it is a very beautiful place to come and see from different angles the river. I recommend you come here at evening or noon, because at morning, the sun is on the river. A very beautiful place to finish a day in Douro Region.

This viewpoint is easy to get to as you can drive to near the top. The road is quite steep and narrow but there was no other car around. We were here on a beautiful day in October without anyone else around. The short 10 minute hike uphill brings us to several altars with another view.

Probably the best view is even before you get to the summit and the chapels of devotion. Still the whole area is very nice for a picnic and to walk

No words can describe the feeling of seeing the Douro and its surroundings with such magnificence. 10 times better than what we were expecting by pictures seen before 🙂. Really worth it.

One of the most beautiful views from a mountain top I've ever seen. The valley has views that I've never seen anywhere else.
