Hi, I've been traveling around Uzbekistan, then when I was in Samarkand I had this idea to go to Tadjikistan to see the amazing Iskanderkul lake.
So I met with Rohib at the border (2h by taxi from Samarkand), his Whatsapp number is +992931950008, he's friendly and speak english, you can't ask for more 🙂

A difficult and bumpy drive up a gravel road is well worth it for the spectacular views and scenery. The road passes through remote and interesting villages.

We did a return day trip from the Panjakent border to Haft-Kul, seven lakes. Our driver Rohan (+992 931950008 on telegram) met us at the border and drove us for the day to each of the lakes, and to Mijgon homestay for lunch. He spoke English, and was helpful and informative. The lakes are breathtaking. Lake 7 is reached by hiking 40 minutes. The others you all pass by car. Highly recommended trip!

The trip to Haft-Kul/the Seven Lakes is out of this world.

Watch out that if you want to drive it is all dirt track, and often there is room for only one car to pass!

My hotel in Panjakent arranged a day trip with a taxi driver. i paid 870 TJS/€72 and the driver did everything calmly, with lots of photo breaks, from 9am to 4pm.

You need to hike, around an hour each way, from the sixth lake to the seventh.

Spectacular day.

The lakes are beautiful, and so are the surrounding villages, valleys and hikes. We went on a tour organized by ZTDA Community tourism. The organizer Jamshed and the driver Behrud were excellent. The homestay in Nofin was also superbly located.
We had a toddler along and the harrowing road became less of a concern because of the views and Behrud's careful driving.

We were on a 2 day / 1 night tour from Samarkand to Tajikistan. We spent 1 night in Penjakent and started our drive to the Seven Lakes at 8:30 am.

We got to the 1st lake after 1 hour and 20 minutes. The road is 1 lane and it is bumpy and not paved and windy. It is best to go with a 4 wheel drive which we did.

After another 1.5 hours, we were at the 6th lake. To get to the 7th Lake, you need to hike 1.5 kilometers. We didn't do the hike. The elevation at the 6th Lake was about 6000 feet.

The color of the lakes are pretty. You can also see snow capped mountains in the distance.

We went on November 7. We lucked out on the weather. It was sunny but the high was only about 46 degrees. In the morning, it was quite cold.

I was in a tour group of 15 with a company from Uzbekistan called Advantour which covered all 5 Stans. To get to the lakes we transferred from a big bus to two mini vans and I, sitting in the front was privy to a very scary bumpy ride. The winding roads were basically the width of one car and if someone else was heading the other way, they had to look for a nook in the mountain to pull over as only one vehicle could fit. We drove on to Lake No. 6 and had to hike for a couple of hours to No. 7. It was definitely worth it. The rugged beauty of the rocky mountains, the blue and green water of the lakes, was breathtaking. We stopped at a guesthouse by Lake No. 4 for an overnight stay. Next morning as we zig-zagged down, our vans pulled over periodically when possible and allowed some of us to hike on the road for a bit, take photos and enjoy the peaceful scenery. With no breeze to send ripples, the lakes reflected perfectly the blue skies, the mountains, houses perched on top and it was gorgeous. It took about 2 1/2 hours of creeping up the mountain road in the vehicles equipped with 4-wheel drive. Not for the faint of heart. But for those who like to go off the beaten path and experience the lesser traveled parts of the world, this would be a lovely place to do so.

So beautiful and peaceful seven lakes. So worth a visit. You can stay at one of the rest houses near the lakes. The seventh lake is the biggest. Crystal blue and green water

A line of blue lakes scattered among treeless mountains. The lakes have been created due to huge rockfall in ancient times.

Definitely one of the things you should see when in Tajikistan. The only con to this is that if you don't hike the whole way, which takes a day or to, you'd get to endure a really scary car ride on a steep slope of the mountain. I was really scared we're going to fall down the hill as the road is just cut into the mountain-slope and very narrow. Yeah, the views were definitely worth it.
