The drive from Carmel down to just beyond Hearst castle is possibly 50 miles as the crow flies but 100 miles on the CA 1 much of it is two single lanes and busy with sightseers. If you stop at each pull out for photos it would take all day. It took us 5= hours and about 50 photos mainly... More

The drive through the area is really fund - lots of windy roads with amazing views, right on the cliff edge! I wish there were more signs for things to pull over a see. We missed McWay Falls as we didn't realise we'd passed it, there was no sign. We missed the village centre as there was no sign, and... More

I have always liked Big Sur. However, the park has changed. I didn't see any RV camping. All of the campgrounds are for ten campers and bike camps. They have also cabled off the river to prevent access to salmon spawning areas. I found the park crowded on a Fall weekday. There didn't seem to be as much to see... More

Just like the photographs, this is a California gem. If you are awed by nature and the beauty of ocean coast, this is THE place to come. Highly recommended. Bring a wind breaker, even in the summer...

Of course the walk to view the falls is wonderful, but the hike up the stream or river that goes over the falls is a bit like rain forest, dramatic with more falls, and some scary drop offs along the trail.

The views are spectacular on the drive there, but the waterfall is tiny and far away from view after you hike down the trail. The state park people who man the booths make you pay even if you have a child that only needs to go potty quickly. When we were in the bathroom, another woman said she only had... More

This was a beautiful campground and my only regret was not staying longer! There is lots to explore even before getting on the hiking trails like gorgeous redwoods and the creek running through the campground. We stayed in site 023 and the back of it was just dirt from a recent mudslide so any campsites on the inside of that... More

This is a photographers paradise ... especially for sunset! I don't think it's possible to have a bad seat for sunset in Big Sur ... but this one is up there. It's always on my list when I visit.

At Pfeiffer State park you can pull off the Highway 1 into a limited number of day parking spots-we stopped and ate lunch. The wind was high that day and made a noise like a train and howling voices.
