About
Built in 1932, Bixby bridge is a picturesque sight in stunning Big Sur and one of the most photographed bridges on the Pacific Coast Highway. But it's not just a photo opportunity; the area offers fantastic hiking and wildlife sightings as well. If you're looking for the best view of the bridge, park at the Castle Rock viewpoint on the north side, or head half a mile inland to the Bixby Bridge vista point.
If you're planning to visit during golden hour, prepare for heavy traffic and scarce parking available, especially in the warmer months.

- JJJC_Family808 contributionsIconic and for good reasonYou probably have seen pictures of this bridge even if you had no idea what the name was or where it’s located. I know that’s how I first saw it. When you actually see it in person, you say “I know that bridge.” Let’s be clear. It’s a great looking bridge and it’s placed in a fabulous location. Whether you are coming from the north or the south as soon as you glimpse it, you focus on it like a laser, which is dangerous if you are driving. Better to have your spouse drive. The view is phenomenal and I have never driven by without seeing cars parked on the south side of the bridge and their drivers ogling in complete fascination. Usually, it’s filled to overflow and frustrated drivers are forced to move to a different location, further away, to ogle. Get there early so it doesn’t happen to you.Visited December 2022Written 12 December 2022
- Curious800858Stittsville, Canada3 contributionsWorth the time and effortWe started from Oceanfront Ranch ,drove to Bixby bridge and drove back to Lucia Lodge. This way we were able to experience North and South bound views. We went on 30th Nov. There was a risk of rain and land slides but it was a nice day BUT Careful our fears materialized a weak later when the 40 miles of Big Sur was actually closed off. Next time we will avoid the the rainy seasonVisited November 2022Written 17 December 2022

- Mitzie M3 contributionsWhat an amazing tripA must visit! Such an iconic site. The edge of the United States of America. It’s really beautiful to see the rocks’ edge and the ocean’s waves crashing against it. There’s a dirt road to the left of the bridge to be able to see the bridge from a different angle. Worth the very short drive from the bridge itself.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 September 2023
- Etan4 contributionsBridge + Ocean = AmazingIt truly is an amazing stop. The views of the bridge are incredible, but so is the view out into the ocean. There is ample parking on the ocean side and even more on the other side. Just don't park where it says not to. While we were there, we watched a CHP officer give two parkers $1,000 fine tickets for being in a very well signed no parking zone.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 November 2023

Bixby Bridge was on my bucket list and it did not disappoint. We drove down Highway 1 from the Northside and stopped along Bixby, Pfeiffer Beach and McWay Falls. The views from Highway 1 was exhilarating.

Bixby Creek Bridge is well worth the turnout for a lengthy view of the incredible vista! The bridge itself is spectacular and the view of the surrounding shore is like nothing else!

As Iconic as it gets this 1930s era bridge marks the gateway to Big Sur. Plenty of places to park allow visitors to step out and take some nice photographs. Stay away from the edge, however. No rails. A must stop on any trip to Carmel or south.

The Bixby Bridge is one of the most iconic sights on Highway 1. It is an engineering marvel from the early Twentieth Century. It is set in a beautiful setting along the Pacific coast with dramatic views of the Santa Lucia Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. My family and I visited on our drive down Highway 1. Parking can be hard to find nearby because it is a popular stop. Also you need to be careful because people get out of their cars to take pictures and they cross the road near the bridge.
It was foggy the day we visited, but that added a little mystery to the area around the bridge. I recommend a visit to Bixby Creek Bridge if you are driving down Highway 1.

There is an overlook next to the bridge where you can park and take photos. Enjoy! Such beautiful scenery driving the PCH!
Looking for a route to hike down to the beach under Bixby bridge, does any one have leads?

There is no way to WALK down to Bixby Beach- the cliffs on both sides are too steep, access is limited and the only conceivable hike would involve a moderate trek down the valley through private property (the locals have been increasing disinterested in the amount of tourist activity around Bixby Bridge- think handcuffs and/or buckshot). Kayaking-in is doable, but not for the novice or the faint-of-heart or someone without lots of life insurance.

If traveling from San Francisco to LA is there a way of turning around to cross the bridge? If so, how many extra miles am I looking at?

Yes, no problem, no extra miles. On the other side of the bridge there's a pull in to park up, or turn around. Enjoy the ride.

Highway 1 is completely open now. No matter the direction you drive from you can access the bridge and all of Big Sur.

Yes the bridge remains open. It is the part above San Simeon that is closed. we stayed over there to see the elephant seals, then went back on the inland highway to detour around the closure to get to big Sur.

Read the review by snivsl with warning about roads. I have done Route 1 from about Carmel to Bodega Bay and tolerated it as we drove north but never did Hearst Castle to Big Sur. I do have height fright and am easily spooked by narrow coastal roads with drop offs. We were planning on driving north from Claremont area. How frightening is drive from Hearst Castle to Big Sur? Should we plan on going inland for particularly bad sections? Please advise-thanks!

If that’s the case, avoid route 1 as much as possible. You could even go a bit south of Big Sur and then come north using Route 1. The advantage is the north-bound route 1 is on the side of mountains (as opposed to cliffs), and therefore will be less scary on you.
