We were met at the barrier by Ken, who shepherded us into his hut and explained the site’s history, and gave us directions to the actual site. The visitor museum had burned down in 2018, but still contains a traction engine in the rubble. The views are wonderful, and I loved the flowering wattle and unique fir trees. We found our way to the ‘Lion’s Cave’ along a path and steel steps, from which are truly spectacular views.

Ngwenya Iron-ore mine is no longer functioning but is a location where iron has been mined since 43,000 years ago. The visitor center has a small display on the history of mining in the area along with an old steam engine that was used to melt the iron. The displays explain the reason for the mines closing up as the route to the Mozambican coast becoming inaccessible up made it impossible to export the iron. A short drive from the visitors center is the Lion Cavern where the iron was mined 43,000 years ago. While the cavern itself is just a small hole in the rocks, the scenery along the way was fantastic with the colorful layers of earth left by the mining and the artificial lake created by it.

Came here just after we crossed the border with our rental car. Need about 2 ours total to see this mine and the cavern further up the road. Absolutely beautiful viewpoint to take in of the old mine.

With this mine being the oldest in the world, dating back 43 000 years ago, it is rich in history and a marvel to the eye. Having a low priced guided tour, you take a 15 minute walk to a view point where you can peer down into the deep open cast mine on one side and the extensive Barberton mountain range on the other. This trip is a gem in the rough.

The place was closed when we visited, but it was nice to look at the mine from the top, it's quite a view. It's a little out of the way, but worth the journey. Pity you can't walk or hike here, only complaint really.

Looking at the scenery before you even enter the little mining museum is amazing on its own!
Small little museum with a lot of history.
Actually the oldest mine in the world. Kept on mining until they had hit water and now the locals use the water as holy water for baptisms.

The mine is now closed, but we were allowed to enter and drive up to the lake and Lion Cavern to hike. The views were amazing! There was recently a fire here and you can see the damage to the landscape and visitor center.

After paying the guard at the gate (who would usually come in your car to give you a tour otherwise you are on your own), we drove 4mins to the museum, then another 1km to the parking area for our little hike to the top to the 'Lion Cavern' which is also listed on tripadvisor on it's own.

Hi. Can someone give me directions and tell me whether or not there is a lot of walking required to see this attraction please? Are there local guides on site to give information and is there an entry fee?
