Fromelles marks the entrance of Australians into the action on the western front. It was a baptism of fire, with horrendous casualties. Many bodies were interred in mass graves. This new cemetery was built in the last decade and reinterred bodies of soldiers from a mass grave found in 2009. About half of the bodies have been identified. It is a moving and fitting tribute to their service.

The story of Pheasant Wood is one of a man's doggedness to finish a story of brave warriors and another groups desire to give remains a name. Visit and read need time to reflect in the museum afterwards.

Our guide Greg Celerse provided us with an excellent understanding of the development of the cemetery, its background and its positioning with respect to the battlefields of Fromelles. The cemetery is well presented, well maintained and strategically placed within the town, near the Pheasant Wood grave site and accompanying museum. A must visit for tourists to France.

Five and a half thousand Australians were casualties on 19 July 1916 at Fromelles the worst day in Australian military history. Many had no known grave until 2009 when a major search took place and this cemetery was created.

This is a great story, with Lambis Englezos' detective work to thank for finding the lost burial pits, governmental effort to exhume, identify and re-inter soldiers' remains, and local goodwill from the Village. Sad, as all these places are, but somehow peaceful. Also elating, in the sense that these men and boys who died fighting together, were lost, but are now found, have been accorded appropriate military honours and now rest together.

This is the newest Australian War Cemetery in France, built to shelter the graves of Australian soldiers exhumed from a mass grave near Fromelles. The visitors' centre is interesting and well set out, but the real story is in the lines of white headstones. In a quick glance at the cemetery register I saw names from all over NSW, including one young man from a little place near my own home. He's ended up a long, long way from Minmi pub, poor bloke. If ever a place should be haunted, it's the area around the Somme.

The Mayor of Fromellles Jean-Gabriel Masson gave a moving speech and tribute to the Australian Soldiers who lost their lives fighting to defend the village of Fromelle in the First World War. At this ceremony there was a burning of Eucalyptus leaves as an emotionally beautiful symbolic gesture to cleanse the past and start anew friendships between all cultures. On 19 July 1916 so many of our soldiers died and were buried in mass graves behind the German lines and not identified for almost 100 years. The 5th Australian Division suffered 5,533 casualties, over 90% of the infantry involved in the attack. The 61st Division suffered 1,547 casualties, some 50% of their attacking strength.

I found this the most moving war memorial I have visited in France. The museum gives a thorough explanation of what occurred at Fromelies and I came away with an understanding of what it would have been like for the young Australian men, most of whom were 19 - 25 years old and horrors they experienced there. I left the museum in tears and was overcome in the cemetery. I think having sons of the age do the soldiers that died there made it really hit home what a senseless waste/ tragedy this was.

Next to the Battle Museum and well worth visiting along with a walk out to the German bunker and Australian Memorial. Make sure you have the booklet that explains it all.

For the most under prepared Australian Division (5th) they were given the honour (or short stick) and thrown into the Battle of Fromelles July19th 2016 . My Grandfather, John Ernest , having enlisted in August 1915 went into his first battle and came out with GSW , only. I am eternally glad he didn't end up in Pheasant Wood MC as I wouldn't be writing this. But the poor buggers who didn't make it are now honoured in this lovely Cemetery and many have a name on their grave and can be individually feted by family & others ! The Battle of Fromelles was more of a Slaughter , 5533 Killed, Wounded or Missing, the "Heaviest Concentration of Losses in Australian Military History" ! A real chilling but still uplifting experience I think. no I know it is !
