    Charyn Canyon, Lake Kolsay
Charyn Canyon is a beautiful place to be if you are in Almaty region. It is a 3-4 hours drive from the Almaty city. There are two local companies who offer a tour package to Kolsay Lake, Charyn Canyon, Moon Canyon, Black Canyon. The package in october, 2023 it was 11000 Tenge. Companies are: KK Tours and Joinme Asia. Both are very reliable and trustworthy. They will give you a meeting point at 6am in the morning. The bus will depart at 6.30 and the tour will end at 8.30pm at night.

Splendid!!! Speechless!!! Gradier!!! Endless!!! Mega!! Inspiring!
Just among the ONLY TWO in the Entire World! No words to describe it. We have not been to Grand Canyon of USA , so this was the first of its kind. Absolutely gorgeous, amazing and beautiful. Just worth the entire trip. Just a little advise as we didn't get enough time to explore it. Better to start early from Almaty reach directly to Canyon. You can go down to the base and spend time there. They have car drop service or you can simply walk. Its an endless expand, So quiet & calm that you will have one of the most powerful experience of your life. They got a small cafe ag the entry serving good . If interested, they are building a resort and should be ready by next year to spend a night.

    Grand Canyon of Kazakhstan
It's highly recommended for those who opt to hike like me. I haven't been to Grand Canyon of the US, but my friends and family who have been there were amazed at how it was similar when I shared the pictures. April was the perfect time to visit. Wasn't that cold or hot to hike in this place. Going down at the end for me was that easy, and you needed more time as you would be amazed with the rock formations. We took the open truck (800 tenge each person) going back as we didn't have much time left because that was past 5 PM and kinda getting dark already. I recommend that if you plan to see this Grand Charyn of Kazakhstan, it should be for a day so you will have enough time to hike and admire the place. It will take a 3-hour drive from the city, and you gotta to have your own packed snacks and water. One thing, you need to have your hiking shoes when visiting these places. I would love to go back someday with my friends but with a longer time.

The canyon is considered the Grand Canyon of Kazakhstan. The history of Charyn Canyon stretches back 12 million years when the river started slowly eroding the stone around it. The oldest, darkest layers at the bottom of the canyons are volcanic lava rocks, on top of which debris slowly accumulated to form natural sculptures. Relatively easy to walk around with the site signposted in English. There is also a small bus you can take along the bottom of the canyon.

We (me, my husband and other couple our friends) had terrific 2-days, 1-night voyage to Charyn Canion and Kolsay lake. Do not expect any civilized features or that type of comfort. But be ready to meet pure nature, amazing landscape, wild river and gorgeous mountains with cows and sheep on them. Both Canion and Lake are just miracles, you could not imagine it until you see. Rented trailer helped us to compensate lack of decent restaurants and toilets on the way. But even without it the trip is worse of it.

Most iconic place to visit in Kazakhstan, I took a day trip from Almaty leaving early morning with a group of exciting Russian tourists, this colourful rock formations on the dried stream of Charyn river offer panoramic views at every angle. The guide gave an hour and half to walk up to the final view point. Signages and informative display boards are excellent. It's a bit risky on some edges and one has to be extremely careful in taking photographs. It was windy and cold and therefore it's advisable to wear warm clothes and a protective cap. A must visit to enjoy the wonder and grandeur of nature.

A must visit when in the country. This is like a mini version of the Grand Canyon and takes around 1-2 hours to visit. Best to go early in the morning to beat the heat. And need to bring along water for hydration.

Very beautiful place , still being developed. The visitor centre is very beautiful and has a shop, a restaurant and toilet facilities. Unfortunately for us it was a foggy sunless morning yet we were impressed by what Mother Nature had to show us. We only had an over- look and did not go down to the canyon bed for a hike upto the river. It would be good to plan this part right from the start. Apparently there are many species of wild mammals in this area and we managed to see a fox and some mountain rats cutely poking their heads out of the burrows. One could spend hours just staring at the earthy coloured rock formations trying to imagine castles, animals, human figures etc. Overall , It was a nice visit .Best to leave Almaty very early as it takes two hours driving. Another two hours drive from here and you reach the Kolsai lake.

Charyn National Park around 3 hours drive from Almaty through some great landscapes. After going through gated entrance there is lots of car parking with good toilet facilities. There is a steep concrete stair path down into the canyon and it’s around a 3km walk all downhill to the bottom of the canyon where you meet the river. The eroded rock structures in the valley are fantastic (a mini Grand Canyon). At the river there are more toilets and lots of picnic shelters. The river is very beautiful and fast flowing (no swimming). There is also an old Russian truck with seats that you can pay to take you back up the canyon to the start at the bottom of the stairs. For less able visitors the truck can also take you down the canyon. There are some shelters on the trail in the canyon with drinking fountains (which in the very hot summer months you definitely need), take additional water also and sunblock. At the top of the Canyon there are also some great viewpoints across the canyon and broader landscape with picnic shelters and more toilets. Overall a really well organised site. Still need to be very careful with young children as there are many big drops into the canyon with no fencing anywhere. Well worth the trip out from Almaty to see the stunning scenery.

Highly recommended. One if the most astonishing natural wonders I have ever been lucky enough to see. Toilets on site as is a taxi system to run people up/down the canyon if they don’t wish to walk the 5km return journey.

Here I want to describe cheapest but most uncomfortable way to Charyn canyon from Almaty. You have to be prepared walk around 30 km, remember couple words in Russian, share local taxi or minibus with local strangers and wait for driving from several minutes to several hours depending on your luck. Itinerary: first you have to reach Sayahat bus station on a corner of Raimbek and Suinbai streets. There is stops for intercity buses but also for minibuses and taxi. In order to find right transport you have to ask taxi drivers "Kegen?". This is name of village in canyon direction. After they will direct you to driver which transport go first to that way, you have to say him "I stop Charyn povorot". There is only one word in Russian - povorot means turn, but understandable for locals that you want to stop on the turn to Charyn canyon. Cost of this trip will around $10 or 3 000 - 3500 tenge maximum depending on your negotiations skills. Then you will wait till driver fulfills all seats in car and after 3 - 3,5 hours you will on Charyn turn. After you have to walk around 11 km till the entrance to national park, pay around $2 or 700 tenge entrance fee and enjoy your time in canyon which is around 4-5 km long. On a way back, you have to walk till turn and try to stop any transport to backward direction. First question to driver who stops has to be "Almaty?" and if you are lucky he will say yes then you will get back for the same money and time. If not, ask him "Kokpek?". As usual most of them goes to that village and this trip will cost you around 500 tenge or $2 and 0,5 hour drive. In Kokpek you will have much more chances get taxi or bus till Almaty for 3000 tenge or $10. All together cost of trip will $25 maximum.
If you have more questions about this itinerary or want to get there by easier but more expensive way please write me on "send message" in my profile and I will help all of you.
