Those who plan to worship Panja lingam, better to take 200 special ticket and request guard after worshiping lord Murugan to know the path. Its located on the adjacent side of lord murugan statue. If you missed to notice the way -too difficult to enter the way leads to Panja lingam.

This temple is one of the "Arupadai veedu" temples. Fortunately, when we visited there was not much crowd and we had a peaceful and satisfying darshan. Avoid going on special days.
Like many other temples, this also has an ancient history and heritage. You need at least 2 hours to see it completely.
Archagas are very good on a normal day and explain your questions well.
Don't put any money in the hundi, as it goes to the government departments who need not spend the money for temple requirement. Instead, give it to the archagas who will provide you a good darshan with the explanation (follow this for all Hindu temples in south India)

Tiruchendur is one of the famous temples for lord Subhramanya. One of the six sacred abodes of lord muruga as per legend,
this is the most celebrated temple in south.Famous for the soora samharam festival, people make it a point to visit it atleast once every year.
As per astrology, it is believed that navagrahas (nine planets) workshipped lord muruga here.So workshipping here helps to get the blessings of all the gods and removes evil effects of any planetary transits.
It has a beautiful serene beach and the place vibrates with energy from the pilgrims. Try visiting the panchalingas located in small cave behind the main deity. Also there is a small cave near the beach in temple premises for goddess valli, where she is supposed to have hidden to escape from Lord ganesha who came in the form of elephant.
Best time to visit is during afternoons(2.00 - 3.00pm) when it is not crowded much and also at around 8.00 - 9.00 pm to keep away from agents and the free entry queue moves fast during this timings.
The temple closes at 9.00 pm and is open from 5.00 am.It is not closed any time in-between like other temples.

Thiruchendur Murugan Temple is one of the most esteemed religious places of south India. Located right on the beach of Tuticorin District, it attracts millions of devotees over the year paying respect to the in-house deity of Lord Murugan, the Tamil version of Lord Kartikeya. The temple has a very interesting history rooted in the legend of Lord Murugan's first battle, which was also the purpose of his birth. The temple hosts a number of festivals throughout the year when devotees can make offerings to the god, the most important and popular one being Skanda festival during October-November marking the victory in the battle of Thiruchendur. It is one of the few temples in India which has various forms and avatars of both Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva together. Being located within 200 metres of the sea, it is a miracle that the temple premise is never flooded - not even during the Tsunami
As described in the Skanda Purana, the demon king Surapadma, blessed with Shiva's boon that none but his son can kill him, unleashed torture over everyone living. Devastated, the gods begged Lord Shiva to save them. This led to the birth of Lord Murugan - born of fire sparks and brought up by the goddess of earth. At a battle at Thiruchendur at Tuticorin, he defeated Surapadma and killed him, and after that worshipped his Lord father, Shiva at this very spot
Originally believed to be a stone structure cut out of the hills, in later years it was renovated and rebuilt with granite. The locally found red sandstone was used for the foundation of the temple, from which the place gets the name 'Senthur' meaning red region.
The Raja Gopuram - the very ornate and main doorway of any South Indian temple which acts as an entrance into the temple premise is situated on the western side. The nine-storeyed, 137 feet long and 90 feet wide elaborate structure called Mela Gopuram rises over everything else into the sky of Thiruchendur. This gate is only used during festivals. The main entrance is the southern gate called Shanmukha Vilasa.
A Well maintained and manged Temple

We drove from papanasam to Tiruchendur and reached by 6.40 pm. The moment we reached the small town where temple and sea shore is the only attraction. We decide to have a Dharshan of lord Muruga and took ticket of 100 each. We were three, not much crowd. We could rush trough queue guiding stainless steel barricades. Near the moolasthanam I.e, sanctum Santorum there were crowds. But within 10 min we could see abhishekam Dharshan. We also had good look of shanmugar. Came out with in 1 hour. We stayed nearby hotel. And morning around 5.30 woke up and had rushed to sea to have bath in the sea. Very strong waves, as amavasya approching within next two days, we had strong and high tides. It was throwing us everywhere very funny, later we rushed to clean water or to say Aazhi kinaru, which otherwise known as sweet water or holy water well which is located near by sea. Natures wonder. I spite of so much of big sea’s presence the sweet water was made available, we took bath and washed all our beach sand and along with that our previous janam paap too. Then we rushed with wet dress to hotel and had full bath. Refreshed, changed dress. I preferred a dhoti and on top just a towel. As temple authority do not permit gents to enter with t shirt or plain shirts. Bare chest and with lot more devotion. This time we took the help of priest who agreed to take us till the moolasthan to have better view or Dharshan of god SUBRAMANYA SWAMY. We could have Dharshan within 30 min thouugh there was huge crowd due to Sunday and marital auspicious day. Nice Dharshan and this time with all alankaram. He good look at sea, felt like full8y refreshed. And returned to hotel to get back to chennai by 11 am

One can easily reachable through train or bus to this temple. Try to reach early if you plan for head shave. Then take bath in beach as well as in special well called naali kinaru. There will be hotels available for breakfast and lunch.Room will be rented for 24 hours per day for 1800 Rupees. Want to save time then go for 250 rupees queue. Or else 100 rupees queue is enough.
