An hidden gem inside Panna district. When people spend money and go to See Grand Canyon, why not visit this in our backyard ?
Superb place, MP tourism can make it more popular along with the nearby Raneh water falls.

After the entry gate to the Ken Gharial Sanctuary, you drive for about 2km to the Raneh Falls Canyon view points. These provide spectacular views of the Ken River Canyon with its multi coloured volcanic rock formations there. From there you drive further through the forest for 5km where the river canyon opens up and there is a view point from where you can see some crocodiles lying about 100 feet below, on the opposite river bank, and can be viewed through the guide's binoculars. It seems there are no more gharials left as they were eaten up by the crocs which came down river from the Panna National Park.

Well, its a common entry point for Raneh falls and the Ken Ghariyal Sanctuary. You need to buy a ticket from the Madhya Pradesh Forest Dept. at the entrance, which also include the guide fee. Its a 6km drive one-way through the forest to the viewing point at Ken River. The forest is mostly not dense and one can see antelopes, specially Neel Gai, langoors, spotted deers and occasionally a fox. While the drive is fine, the viewing point for Ghariyals is rather disappointing in a sense that while the view is nice, its very difficult to spot a ghariyal even if they are there. Its like very far above and one has to use a binocular to spot a ghariyal (if you are lucky) and that too not like a clear view. But nevertheless no harm in trying out luck.

KEN GHARIYAL SANCTUARY, Chhatarpur/Panna District, Madhya Pradesh

After Khajuraho we started our journey towards Panna National Park for Safari. In between we visited Ken Ghariyal Sanctuary which is on the way. Government has given protection to Ghariyal.

This is extended part of Panna National Park and we can see N numbers of Neelgai, Jackles, Deers and Mongoos etc.

There is Beautiful Canyon made of granite in different shades of 4-5 colours due volcano eruption. Raneh Waterfall and other waterfalls also looks very beautiful. There is Canopy wall which was built in Chanderi kingdom for hunting & One Natural Trail inside the park.

Fees for Vehicle and Guide charges total ₹700/-

Overall this was Great Experience.

Ken Gharial sanctuary is around 15 Kms from Khajuraho. The drive from Khajuraho to this place itself is a beautiful experience. The road passes through small villages and green fields. The entrance to the sanctuary is basically a permit for the vehicle and is Rs 600 for a car. A forest guide accompanies you and the charge is Rs 100. The mud road inside the sanctuary leads to the edge of the ravine. The river Ken or Karnavati flows deep through a gorge formed millions of years ago from a volcano. This place is also called the grand canyon of India. From the top of the ravine one can see many crocodiles basking in the sun on rocks. The guide has a binocular and he also helps to take photos of the animals.
Gharials are unique fish eating crocodiles and are endangered species today. One can also see many other animals in the forest like deer, wild boars, peacocks and wild cattle.
The sanctuary also houses a beautiful waterfall called Raneh falls. River Ken or Karnavati falls into the deep gorge and also between unique rock formations at two places. One can find 5 different types of igneous rocks here which is quite unique in the world.
A visit to this sanctuary is a must for nature lovers.

This was my first ever visit to a sanctuary. Although we didn't find any gharials but we were able to find a crocodile resting on a small island.
