The climb up to the castle is well worth it to get a feeling of how important it was to the 14thC Knights Templar defence network for Portugal. The partial restoration allows us to imagine what it was like to live in such a castle, with its walls and turrets, residential quarters, church, garden areas and central defensive keep. There... We went there after lunch, with a baby. He was sleeping, so it was not so easy on the beggining, of course it's not the floor it's not leveled. After he waked up even he was having fun. It's well preserved and has a very good view and perspective of all the city, and the history is present on photos,... More

A bit hard to get to, we went and the castelo's gates were closed. We checked the open hours on the schedule and it should have been open. Also, we weren't early or late. There was no excuse for it being closed; and, when asking about it in town, we were told this wasn't unusual. So, it might be worth... More

It is a historical landmark in formation of Portugal as country. Part of the Knights Templar strategy in the country formation. Deserves reading and visit.

Castelo de Leiria was both a military fortress and royal palace; the ruins and restored areas are great fun to explore, especially because it doesn't get many visitors, so your on your own. As other reviews have said the views are spectacular and the very modest entrance fee also includes discounts for seniors and kids. There are lots of nooks... More

A mixture of history, love and drama venue. The 50's renewal brought a palace feeling much closer to the princes and princesses mood.

One of the oldest castels in Portugal, this one is de ex libris of this city! You can see him from almost everywhere in the city. They have a lot of activities there through the year but even if you want to just visit the castle you should. Getting there isn't very easy since it's on the top of the... More
