About
The Picts in stone - Meigle Museum has an impressive collection of Pictish carved sculpture, including cross slabs, recumbent gravestones, a hogback stone and rare architectural fragments. These demonstrate both the artistic vigour of Pictish society and the skill of its stonecarvers. The former schoolhouse housing the collection backs onto the graveyard where most of the stones were found. The present church at Meigle dates to around 1870, but there has probably been a church on this site for over a thousand years.

- Laura M3 contributionsAwesome placeOne of my favorite places. The lady was really nice and knew her stuff! I spent a lot of money in the gift shop. It had so many different items than the other gift shops. If you are interested in Pictish stones this is a must seeVisited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 13 May 2024

Great interpretation and a very nice guide who gave a good description of context. If you’re into Pictish art or history, this is a must do. In the adjacent churchyard there is also Vanora’s mound, reputed to be the last resting place of King Arthur’s Guinevere.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 May 2024
- DHofHarrogateHarrogate, United Kingdom29 contributionsAmazing Pictish sculptured stones from Scotland's pastMeigle Museum has the largest collection of ancient Pictish sculptured stones anywhere. These stones are a fascinating glimpse into Scotland's pre-history, revealing clues about the "dark ages" people of the early medieval era. While it's a tiny museum, it's definitely worth an hour to see the incredible art and culture of these important ancestors.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 August 2024

We flew in on a Sunday morning and drove directly to the museum because it's only open Fri - Sun and otherwise we would have missed it. If you're interested in the Picts I think this is a must see. And if you're also interested in old gravestones the adjoining cemetery has many worth seeing. Our guide was not only helpful but also a distant relation. :D The only problem we had was finding it, GPS took us to Meigle but didn't give any exact directions to the museum. After driving by a couple times we finally saw the sign.

In this small, unassuming museum you will find one of the foremost exhibits of Pictish stones anywhere and it is well worth the trip. Excellent staff insights add to the interest and I could happily spend hours marveling at this collection. Lynda M was working the day we visited and was absolutely awesome, spending a ton of time with us discussing each stone, the history of the Picts, and generously sharing her expertise in and enthusiasm for the subject. One of the highlights of our trip!

This small museum is a jewel. The stones are of great quality and interest and very well described and are seen to perfection in the natural light provided by all the windows. The guide was beyond excellent - a real enthusiast and generous with her time, knowledge and explanations. She booked a visit to St Vigeans for us and gave us links so that we could follow up topics of interest on the IInternet. There's a well-stocked shop containing a variety of guidebooks and more academic works as well as some charming souvenirs. We couldn't praise it enough and wish all museum experiences could be so intimate, instructive and pleasant- a national treasure, Scotland, take a bow!.

It's one of those places where you have the opportunity to be impressed (in most cases I guess) by the carved Pictish stones, and see how Pictish tribes lived through their eyes.
IMPORTANT: Open summer only! On top of that closed for lunch and last entry 30 minutes before closing.

Lovely little museum with friendly staff. We popped in after a quick lunch nearby, the stones are remarkably well preserved, still so much detail you can see thanks to the fact that they've been kept indoors for more than 100 years.
Don't forget to pass by Guinevere on your way out.

Great experience, decided to visit on the off change after visiting Pictoria a few days into our trip to Scotland. Husband decided we would pop to Meigle which was close to where we were staying, and what a lovely afternoon we had chatting to Lynda and finding out so much more information about the Picts and all the stories and theories behind the artwork on the stones. Extremely fascinating, especially we our own tour as we were the only visitors at the time! Also a great general chat about our lives and plans with Lynda, such a lovely lady! Definitely brightened up our afternoon.

Hello, how long does it takes to visit the museum?
Thank you.

As long as you like. There about 25 stones. The woman on duty today was very good at explaining the Pict symbols and what to look for. We were there about an hour. I think it would depend on your interest in ancient history beyond the castles.
