The place where St Thomas landed
Feb 2019 • Couples
This is a picturesque place on the banks of the River Periyar. Absolutely peaceful. Very well maintained. The light and sound show is excellent and very informative. Inside of the church too is beautiful. They have provision for accommodation for those who want to stay overnight. They have boating facility for those who want to use it. Overall very good experience

"the place where St. Thomas landed in 52 AD"
Aug 2017 • Friends
St. Thomas the Apostle landed at Musuris (now Kodungallur) and it is believed that the origin of Christianity in India is here. The Marthoma Pontifical Shrine, Azhikode Jetty is situated at the place where St. Thomas the Apostle landed in India and the Holy Relic of the Apostle is kept here which will be exposed for veneration daily. Nearby the Shrine we can see the Marthoma Smrithi Tharangam which displays the life history of St. Thomas. Apart from these, there is a bookstall and research center which gives us more information about the Apostle and canteen, accommodation facility for pilgrims etc are also arranged. The Shrine is really a place of religious and historical importance and a must visit if we go to Kodungallur.

Beautiful church in serene location
May 2017 • Couples
A part of a bone of St. Thomas is preserved in this church and it attracts lot of pilgrims.
The church is beautiful and the location itself is beautiful. The church is just next to jetty and waterfacing front adds to the beauty of the church. The church provide an audio-visual show about the life of St. Thomas (duration is 30 minutes).
There are provisions for boating as well, but it is expensive.
One problem is the road leading to the church. The road is narrow and not in good condition. It is better to ask locals if you get lost in the route.

Kodungallur Now, Musiris Then; Believed to be the First Place in India where St. Thomas arrived.
Jan 2017 • Couples
Our visit to Kerala this time had a special purpose of visiting all the seven and a half churches (Ezhara Pallikal ) founded by St. Thomas, one of the disciples of Jesus Christ. He landed at Musiris (Kodungallur ) port by ship on 21 st November in 52 AD and it is also believed to be the origin of Christianity in India.I must admit here that we did not have much information ,but gathered enough from various sources and managed to visit all the churches - Kodungallur, Palayur, Paravur, Kokamangalam,Nilackal, Niranam, Koiiam and Thiruvithamcode.. I shall try to give a few helpful hints for those who are interested in visiting these churches.

Marthomalayam,Kodungallur:

The shortest route to Kodungallur from Trichur,Kerala is by road. We traveled by car and found it difficult to reach the location late in the evening.Be sure to ask for Marthoma Shrine Azhikode Jetty, and not St Thomas church as there are many churches by that name.Distance from Trichur is 46 Kms ,also well connected by bus. Plan extra time for congested roads. The present Shrine was built in 1953 where Marthoma landed in India and it is cnsidered to be tthe most sacred shrine of st Thomas ,in Kerala. Please note the timing as 9 am to 6 pm when the Holy Relic of St. Thomas will be exposed daily for the veneration of the faithful.

The Marthoma Smriti Tharangam, is adjacent to the Shrine, presents the major epsodes of his life in detail with theatrical effects.
There are basic facilities for pilgrimage accommodation ,canteen, and other activities like boating in River Periyar. There is a research centre and a book stall from where we can have the history of St Thomas .

Though reached late,we were fortunate to venerate the Holy Relics of St Thomas in the Shrine as the priests were kind and eager to give us the opportunity. We feel blessed.
