- Richard DCiutadella, Spain767 contributionsBeautiful site, too many tourists. The setting is quite picturesque. The rocks carved by the sea, with an arch amd an island at high tide. The temples cannot be visited and are only opened for praying. There are many tourists milling about also spoiling the beautiful scenery. It was rather crowded when we there around sunset.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 October 2023
- naratharBengaluru, India222 contributionsBeauty of nature and a place to see sunsetA beautiful sea shore temple and a place to witness sunset. Thiugh you are not permitted to go inside the temple you can enjoy the beauty of nature as the temple is on the sea shore. One of the places nit to be missed in Bali. You may require 2 to 3 hours.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 10 October 2023
- bgtocaVancouver, Canada129 contributionsBeautiful seaside templeTanah Lot is a temple surrounded by the pounding waves of the Indian Ocean. Its a beautiful location, especially at sunset or sunrise. Too bad that non-worshipers are not allowed to enter. The temple is viewed from the hill above, which makes for fantastic photo ops. You can also get a Hindu blessing with holy water and holy rice. I did this as a part of our guided tour. There are some locals who will take a photo of you with a python with the temple in the background for a fee if you're interested. There are shops lined up near the entrance/parking lot if you want to shop for trinkets. If you need the bathroom, best to go someplace else if you can. The bathrooms here are very rudimentary and tucked away between the vendor shops. I'm talking about a hole on the ground with a very slippery floor and a bucket with water for flushing. No toilet paper is provided, and there is a fee of IDR 2000- 3000 to use them. Avoid the bathrooms here at all costs if you can.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 11 October 2023
- Fatima MohsinNew Delhi, India9 contributionsTemple carved out of stone! The landscape is beautiful and looks stunning at the sunset. There was a huge crowd and hence you can see garbage lying around. However, we were sad to see that the local people working at the temple were urinating out in the open just beside the holy temple. It also felt weird to be asked to donate moneyVisited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 October 2023
- Traveller102Singapore, Singapore57 contributionsBeautiful sunset and coastline, but not a must!Nice sunset and georgeous coastline. Foreigners aren't allowed to enter the temple but charged 60k per person anyway. Viewing holy snake and holy water is charged extra which I find it not normal as it is a religous place and not a commercial one! Try to avoid the local market along the entrance, sellers are too pushy! if you want to go, go for sunset. Otherwise it is not worth it.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 October 2023
- ejane875Auckland, New Zealand27 contributionsNice sunset spot but nothing specialWent during sunset and it was ok. Tide was out. Couldn’t actually go inside the temple it seems. Watched the sunset from a bar behind the temple. I don’t know if I’d recommend trekking too far to see this. Seen much better temples and vistasVisited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 21 October 2023
- travelwithoutmercyVientiane, Laos191 contributionsOverhypedThe best thing about our visit to Tanah lot was at least it was not busy. Apparently it is packed at sunset. We were there when the tide was out so were able to walk out to towards the monastery, although you are not allowed to enter. There were more shops here than anything else, but the area is well presented and whilst hardly the spectacular it is made out to be is perfectly fine.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 28 October 2023
- Larry MVientiane, Laos586 contributionsDefinitely a must-see when in Bali.We waited until the last morning to go to Tanah Lot temple…definitely the best place we visited in the week. Awesome cliffside setting with views of the sea and surrounding gardens and temples. Can get extremely busy I’m sure. Admission 60,000idr is a bargain. Can stroll for hours and take a zillion photos if you want.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 November 2023
- Branco AZaanstad, The Netherlands192 contributionsNice if you are in the area. This temple is of course in a special place. You can walk there at low tide. At high tide it is its own island. Beautifully built and a truly beautiful sight at sunrise. It is that the hotel was 20 minutes by bike from here. Personally, I wouldn't want to spend 1.5 hours in a car from Nusa Dua or Ubud for this. There are also beautiful temples nearby. But glad to have seen this one.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 November 2023
- markitikiOrlando, Florida684 contributionsImpressive and UniqueUnique temple that you will not be able to see anywhere else in the world. Its a bit of a walk from the carpark, but very manageable. The walk provides loads of shopping (both stalls as well as physical stores) and dining options. The grounds provide options for great views. Majority of the visitors are by the water at the actual temple.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 26 November 2023

The sunset was pretty beautiful, not much to see there except for walking along the beach and the temple. I would not have came here except that my family wanted to as I thought it was slightly overrated.
Our experience was also marred by a scam at a fruit juice shop in the complex. It was a Chinese fruit juice stall (you'll see Chinese words advertising advocado ice cream and smoothies). The Chinese owner was proactive in getting us to go in and was fervent in recommending the menu. However, she intentionally failed to tell us that her menu charges in Chinese Yuan instead of the local currency IDR. Imagine our shock when our bill turned out to be almost three times the normal rate in Bali. We informed her that it was very expensive and we didn't know her currency was not local, and she plaintively ignored our comments. We felt deliberately misled by her. None of her local staff dared to bring us the bill, and she was the only one collecting orders and payments.
We could have been more cautious with the menu, but we definitely did not expected to be charged a different currency from IDR. Please beware of this shop!

Admittedly, the traffic was horrendous. It took us over 2hours from Legian for the 20km journey which should have been about an hour. After we paid our 60Rupiah entry each, we snaked our way through all the retail shops to witness sunset @ Tanah Lot Temple.
Unfortunately, it was less than spectacular and the temple itself was not accessible.
While quite novel, being perched on the side of a cliff, a little too far for little reward.
Recommend that if you go, where supportive shoes because it can be slippery.

It's quiet a distance from the mainland of Kuta. Takes approximately an hour in rush hour traffic to get to the temple. One can get there by a rental bike or a hired car. There is an entrance fee of around 60k per person. Once you enter yr greeted by a lot of shops selling a range of things. After a 2min walk you will reach the main temple. It's way better than the other temples out there because there is a lot of modern, good looking structures built even before we get to the main temple. A lot of good photo opportunities. There is a large park that one can walk around and rest from the blazing sun if you travel in the day.
Tip
1. Carry lots of water as Bali is really really Hot.
2. If you don't have a local Sim card and are traveling by bike, just start yr Maps using Wi-Fi while in the hotel and you will be just fine.

We were sold on taking the 2+ hour drive from Ubud to Tanah Lot by the level of importance this sea temple has for a cultural perspective. However, it's surrounded by tatty souvenir stands, has parking lots to serve lots of tour buses and is overrun by crowds, really taking away from the mysticism of the temple. Pushy tourists, impatient tour guides, just not really creating the environment to appreciate this beautiful location. Unfortunate, but I would give this spot a miss and find another of the many beautiful temples in Bali.

this is a wonderful temple that is justly famous ,however it took me a very long car trip on extremely conjested roads to get there from Sanur which is actually not far away. Once there there is an entrance fee and hundreds of stalls to pass through before getting onto the terraces overlooking the ocean and the possibility of walking down toward the temple on the rock. It is considered a sacred site of great significance despite the hundreds of tourists and as such reminds me of large temples in India and the great cathedrals of Europe that welcome both cultural tourists and the devout. One day I would like to stay nearby and visit in the early morning before the tour buses arrive.

Visited this place as a day trip from Sanur. We hired a vehicle from the hotel and went there. The temple is situated at the sea. We checked the time and just reached at the time of low tide. Tourist not allowed inside the temple, one can go and see it from outside. Locals will offer to allow entry to go up against a tip. It's not worth as one can climb may be 4 or 5 steps only. View is really beautiful and one should not miss it if in Bali irrespective of religious belief.

One of the iconic landmarks in Bali, Tanah Lot is an ancient Hindu temple that rests on a large offshore rock on the coastal line of Tabanan area. This is, in fact, one of the seven temples around the Balinese coast. In the Balinese language, Tanah Lot stands for land (Tanah) in the sea (Lot), quite aptly describing the location of the temple. Tanah Lot is a very popular tourist destination and is often very busy, especially at the time of sunset. At the entrance to the temple, there is a gate with stunning Balinese architecture, and many tourist shops offering local art and crafts.

As the final part of our Temple Tour with Discova, we ended up at the world famous Tanah Lot Temple. Whilst it was incredibly busy, like a lot of the stops on the tour, Tanah Lot also boasted some of the most unique vistas. The island temple itself is a gorgeous site to behold, as well as the distinct styling of the statues and gateways that dot the surrounding area all carrying that certain Balinese charm that is impossible to see anywhere else.
Even if you don't go on a tour of Bali's temples, like we did, Tanah Lot should most definitely be on your list.

The walk towards the temple is packed with souvenir shops. When you want to go to the temple, you’re not allowed in as a tourist even if you wear a sarong. That is ok, but while being denied tourist in short shorts and tanktops came back from the stairs down from the temple. Their very irregular with who they let in and who they dont let in.
The temple itself is nice but very small. Its nog worth the 60k.
Important: if you want to go back by taxi you need to walk at least 30 min to find someone who will take you. There are ni Gojek, Grab ór regular taxi’s from the temple.

Among the temples we visited on a daylong tour, this one was unique. Set on the beach, it is a dramatic sight. Once we walked past all the vendors and got to the ocean, it was refreshing on a hot day to be at the beach with the pounding waves. We enjoyed walking along the shore and seeing several interesting land formations including an arched rock out in the ocean. We liked that the vendors and the temple were really very separated, so we could enjoy the peaceful setting first, and then do some shopping.

Does anyone know if the Kecek dancing performed on a Thursday and/or Friday evening (in addition to Saturday and Sunday)? Also can you buy tickets before you get there? Thank you.

I think the Kecak dance is performed every day, several times (at least twice). Yes I think you can purchase tickets in advance - we did.

Truly no idea. As such I feel these are all way to make money from tourists. My purpose to visit any place is to enjoy natural beauty and history of the monuments.

Hello everyone,
I am wondering if it is a prerequisite to be religious when visiting temples in Bali? I am not religious (sadly I lost my spirituality when I was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease) and do not want to cause offense to local customs. I would also wonder if there is a dress code to adhere to? I would describe my general attire as fairly non revealing, but of course these things can be perceived differently by others.
Thanks in advance,
Chuck P

Hi brother. I will try to explain about your question. Actually any personality and any health conditions that you experiance, do not prevent you to coming in Bali at the tourist attraction of the tample’s like Tanah Lot. The tample beside the holy place is also one of the tourist attractions becouse of the beauty of its shape exotic natural beauty.
Indeed to visit a holy place like a tample must be dressed in a polite and appropriate because after all its the culture in local belief.
Even by coming there you can get a new experience to be more peacefull after returining from Bali. Peace of mind is one of the medicines that can cure any disease as long as you find a sense of peacefull and hapines, it’s one of Bali culture beliefs.
Thank you
Kindly regarsd from Bali 🙏

Is it possible to get garb or gojek bikes while returning from tanah lot?
Thanks!

Although Grab is available in Bali but only in selective areas.
I really don’t know why?
Maybe because they wish to promote people hiring private cars & bikes.
Bikes are available just outside this place.

Hi!!! Is this temple closer to Seminyak? We'll be staying at kokonut suites and want to know the taxi charges to this place? Do they charge for foreigners?
Thanks in advance!!!

Easiest way around is to hire a driver, cost me $50au for the full day.
When going to TanahLot make sure you use your amenities before you go as they are filthy at the temple and you have to pay for the privilege
