Thajiwas Glacier is a natural beauty. Large expanse of snow dotted with snow covered trees. Huge clearing where people are busy sledging, skiing, eating Maggi or just enjoying the mesmerizing 360 degree view.
Trail to Thajiwas Glacier is about 3km and starts from the main road. It is easily walkable if you are generally fit or you can hire a pony. Climb is relatively easier. We paid 3k per pony which we realized later was on the expensive side. So remember to bargain, or not, if you are feeling generous.
The clearing at the top has small slopes which are great for sledging. Kids love it. My 11 year old wanted to do it over and over again.
We hired a photographer too for about INR 1200 for unlimited photographs. They generally charge about INR 20 - 25 per pic but we chose to put an outer limit. The young guy was good and clicked pretty good photos.

Also be careful on the road or while walking up the trail, even with good snow shoes. It's very slippery when the snow hardens and turns to ice or sleet. Locals call it "sheesha aa gaya" which means snow has turned to mirror.

Our second trip to Sonamarg but this time we trekked to the Thajiwas Glacier.
It took us around 2.5 hours to reach the Glacier a 5 km trek; the weather was quite supportive as it was not snowing that period. You can even use road to trek which is more safer than hiking.
It was an enthralling experience, one can say it was inner peace; or a better connect with the basic elements of nature (Air, Water, Earth, Fire). A sense of belonging to these elements in their most primal forms, which we are deprived of in urban life.

It's a very beautiful place. U should slightly go ahead. The guide or the local horse owners would oblige with some extra money. Strongly recommended

place is good, if you can walk around 3 to 4 km then you can enjoy peacefully.
Avoid Pony rides as they are cheating, before finalizing with Pony wala, ask them to show photos of spots in their mobile where they will take you so no cheating, as some time they say they will show snow where you can play in snow but after reaching at height they show see the snow which is far away.
Dont pay more than 1000/- per person for pony ride

If you have already done Zero Point ( Jo zila Pass ) then this can be avoided

We travelled in November.the horse ride is pleasant. The Horse charges are not regulated. They need negotiation. We paid 3500 for two horses and two ghodawala. They also ask for tip. Overall, nice. However the glacier probably is more beautiful in summer. You can skip if you get snow at Zero point and is short on time. Otherwise, do visit

Excellent view, but beware of pony walas there. I went with my wife and kid. The pony wala after showing the first pointy said that all points are the same and we should go back. When I insisted to go further as other customers are going too, he threatened me by going back and leaving me and family alone.

I didnt show any sign of fear, so after walking away for 2 min, he came back. then after walking for few minutes, he again threatened that he will not move further and I have to manage on my own. I still did not show any sign of fear, so he at last took us to the point where other customers were going too.

They try to take advantage when they know that you are visiting for the first time. Its surprising that I paid what they demanded without bargaining and was polite, but still one ponywala came for 3 horses and he threatened me 2 times on the way when no one was around. Please take precautions.

The trek to glacier was very enjoyable. I did trek myself instead of using horses. Awesome views along the path.

A must do adventure in sonmarg. The pony ride is easy. The view of glacier is spectacular. You can trek a little further to get a closer look. If you are not physically fit to trek, you can go by pony. But it's an easy-medium trek.

Beware: you really have to bargain the rates for pony rides & personal(not so professional) photographer. They will give you a soft copy(they load pics in the mobile).

Glacier is far far away and the end point of the trek would only provide a far away view of the glacier in October. It's a small 4km trek either by pony or on foot (very much walkable). We hired pony @1300/person (asking price was 2000). Don't know if this was a good bargain or not as it took only 30-40 mins to reach the final destination. The journey offers good view of mountains, rivers, meadows etc. But no snow in October yet and the Glacier is far far away.
