Great experience, a place to see! The biggest winery in Balkans offers a great tour and extraordinary wines. The only problem we had was how to transport all the wines we bought there by plane :)

We stopped here for lunch while touring Macedonia. I would suggest calling ahead so they can accommodate you. They let us in. The three course lunch with three different wines was excellent. Service was very good; both food and wine were different but in a good way. Remember, the tasting room is a least a two hundred meter walk underground. No matter what season, after twenty minutes, you will regret leaving that little sweater in the car. Use latitude and longitude on your gps to find it. Even then it is difficult to spot. Well worth the effort. Their red wines are amoung the two best made in Macedonia

We had high hopes for a wine tour at the Tikvesh winery. Unfortunately, we weren't able to have a tour. It wasn't clear if this was because they didn't do tours or because we came in the middle of harvest time and they were too busy during this period. Nevertheless we chose to book a wine tasting instead.
We arrived and after checking our booking were directed to the restaurant. We passed through a series of cellars with oak barrels. It all looked very traditional and raised our expectations of what was to come. The restaurant itself was within the cellar and looked beautiful.
We didn't, however receive a particularly friendly welcome as they didn't have any record of our booking and they really didn't seem bothered to serve us. On this occasion not having a booking wasn't even an issue as the restaurant was almost empty but the unfriendliness did start things off badly.
From here things did improve a bit. We were given menus and started to look for the wine tasting package we wanted. I was hoping for a meal with our wine tasting, but the food options were too limited as you get an option of two set meals without the option of deviation. Consequently, if you don't like pork or fish you're out of luck. I don't like fish and partner doesn't eat pork so we couldn't have all the courses of their tasting menu. Happily, there is an option to only have wine or wine with cheese and ham/salami. We chose one wine tasting with cheese/meat, another only wine tasting and a salad to share. This was fine, but the restaurant missed out on two meals.
The food and first wine soon came. Before serving the wines the waiter explained a little about the wines and gave us some tasting notes. His English wasn't the best, but fine for this purpose and we enjoyed these explanations. He'd also cheered up considerably from when we had first arrived.
I like salty food, but this was incredibly salty. Various blocks of cheese flavoured salt. Even the salad which had lots of cheese in it was over salty. The ham and salami however, were excellent and as I mentioned earlier did not need to be shared, nevertheless they were still on the salty side.
The wine tasting consisted of 5 small glasses of wines. Starting with 2 whites a rose and then 2 reds. We later found these wines in many local shops and in other parts of Macedonia. All were very affordable wines yet good quality wines and this tour helped wine choices for the remainder of the trip. We bought a bottle in the winery shop at much the same price as elsewhere.
I would happily recommend a visit here for a tasting, but not for the food. This is a lovely setting and the owners could do much more with it.

Guided wine tour of the wine cellars and production. After that a 4 course lunch with great wines in the restaurant presented by Aleksandar Ristevski.
Food with class that suited the wines uniquely.

We stopped by Tikves to have a quick bite to eat whilst on our way to our next destination. We had not made a reservation, so the guard at the entrance made a quick phone call and allowed us through. To get to the restaurant you get to walk through the winery and see all the barrels. The restaurant was very nice and we had really delicious fish paired with some wine. It was a shame we had the car, otherwise we would have loved to have stayed and sampled some more wine!

This is the largest and the best winery in Macedonia. We had luck to have tour around Tikves Winery and it was very nice. We saw the whole process of production and packaging of wine and brandy.
Highly recommend place to visit.
