It was a guided tour with a very little ticket. The guy explained the whole process of making Patola sarees nicely. A collections of sarees from yesteryears was displayed, along with history of the family making Patola sarees. A must visit place if you are interested in textiles and history.

Handcrafted Patola (also called Patolu) from Pattan is a heritage double Ikat fabric manufactured only for direct clients and delivered to them without any middleman by the Salvi family in Pattan, Gujarat. Any shop, show-room, emporium claiming to sell it is either selling a fake or second hand Patan Patola.

Key features-

1. Equal design and wearable on both sides. Even weavers can’t identify which is the front or back once the weaving is over.

2. Only 3 families in Pattan make them today, out of the original 700 families.

3. 3 people take 4 to 6 months to weave one saree which is 5.5 meters long and 48 inches wide.

4. No computers or power looms are used. Mental calculations, deep concentration, patience, undivided attention and a lot of hard work are the skill sets that make one saree.

5. The measurement tapes (which can measure up to 100th part of an inch) are the same which were invented 1000 years ago.

6. Made only in silk (patt is short for ‘Pattakalam’ which means silk in Sanskrit) as it lasts 80 to 100 years. They consider making it in cotton a waste of their time as it will tear in 40 to 50 years.

Costliest Patan Patola Saree

7. Their cheapest saree starts at 1.5 lac rupees and takes 1.5 to 2 years for delivery. For people who do not want to spend that much they have options of Dupattas (40 to 50,000/- rupees) or handkerchiefs (3 to 4,000/- rupees). A good Patola costs Rs. 3 lacs.

8. Their costliest saree cost Rs 7 lac (above pic) which depicts the procession of Siddh Hemgranth. 12 to 15 people worked for 2.5 years to make it using materials required for making 27 normal Patola sarees.

9. Colours last for over 300 years.

10. They do use chemicals to dye for their lower end sarees but also use pure vegetable dyes for patrons who do not mind the escalated cost.

(as told by one of the Salvi family members Mr. Mehul Salvi)

Patan is a situated 127 Kms North of Ahmedabad in the Indian State of Gujarat. Inheriting a rich cultural heritage, Patan became famous due to its Patolas (double ikat) or normally a sacred silk cloth which took to different forms over time.

Since its creation and advent more than 700 years back, Patan Patolas today take form in the shape of handmade saris draped by women and also hand woven in to stole, scarf, or a handkerchief too – but a costly one at that!

Today, SALVI KANUBHAI MAFATLAL PATOLAWALA and his four family members are the lone flag bearers of this traditional art. He has a modern outlook with years of experience at making Patolas has found a pride place among most honoured artisans of the country.

Salvis have been striving hard to keep up with times without making any changes or compromises on the methods and processes that have been followed to the hilt for centuries now. They are a dedicated lot and ever ready to serve their valuable clients who come to them seeking niche Patan Patolas and scarf, stoles, duppatta etc.

So, if you have the time and inclination, then the house of Salvis are ready to offer their most valued and prized creations - Patan Patola saree, scarf, stole, hath roomals (handkerchief) etc. All products go with the assurance that you will carry a priceless piece of artistry for your next generations to pride upon!

Our guide says this ancient city patan served as gujarat's capital for 650 years , unbelievable. you find the 1000 year old Kali Temple from where kali mata, the kuldevi (family goddess) of the solanki dynasty, guards the town. you go on a treasure hunt in search of the unique patola and mashru weavers. we also visited snow-white jain temples & the hemchandraachrya Jain gnan library of ancient hindu & jain texts. We enjoyed so much to explore this ancient city during our stay at patan.

Patan a city in Gujarat is famous for a weaver family Salvi. This family for generations have kept up the tradition of Patola style of weaving. They use natural dyes from plant and animal extract and they are brightly colored. One can see the mastery craft of weaving by visiting to this family. I was told that they take 6-8 months to weave a saree (indian dress worn by women). The cheapest costs INR 150,000 and goes unto 800,000-1,200,000. If you are in the neighbourhood don't miss visiting this place. It is worth it.

This place is a tribute to the making of Patola saris. At no entry cost whatsoever you can appreciate the art of weaving a Patola sari.

If you want to buy one, you might have to order and wait 6 - 12 months. But it's worth the wait!

We visited patola in the afternoon. We saw the actual weaving of the sarees and it was quite an experience. The colours were so beautiful and bright and the sarees are very attractive.
The weaving was done in a traditional way. The sarees cost anywhere from 1.5 to 3 lakhs. There is a waiting period of two to three years. The weaver family called Salvi Family kept up the tradition for generations.
If you like to see traditional weaving and traditional sarees you must visit this place. AND BUY THE PATOLA SAREES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

a patola saree is ultimate dream of gujarati ladies. this 7 centuries old art is dying with changing times. when we visited patan, we spent more than 1 hour here and the owners took pains to explain us the art, process and history of patola. located on way to rani kivaav in patan.
it also has samples of this technique from across the globe, with india being recognised as pioneers and most proficient in this art.

Patola a double ikat saree which takes 6 months to weave is being weaved by only a family who is dedicated to keep this heritage alive. All the family members of the Salvi family of Patan contribute towards keeping this art alive and this is the only family in India who has 4 national award and 2 Shilp guru awards received from Honorary President of India. Family spares time of 4-5 hours every day to explain how the saree is being prepared and what all the things which goes into it along with 6 months of hard work. All this at NO COST believe me at NO COST at all. Though complete family is professional by education having degrees in Architect, Physiotherapy, Civil engineering still all quit the modern career to keep this art alive and work full time weaving Patola Saree. They are here since 800 yrs when the King of Patan migrated them from Jalna to Patan. One should visit this place to see how Patola is being weaved since the time when there were no scale like milimeter and centimeter were discovered. One of the best form of art is still breathing in Patan the last place where you can see double ikat work.
