While the caves are relatively interesting and the paintings inside without a question are impressive, it Is quite frustrating that the guided tour is available only in Dutch which you get told AFTER you've paid. You'll receive a small overview with English info texts about...More

The caves were very interesting but the language barrier was difficult. They have an app that allows you to hear an explanation of the different stops but the guide sounded much more interesting. They say if there are enough English speaking guests, they do the...More

I understand most people go there for the Christmas market, but the history of the site is really interesting too. You get to visit the castle ruins and the mines underneath which is unusual and you really get the whole story behind the castle. The...More

Finding the entrance to the Velvet Caves was pretty easy as it was well signposted. Paying the entry was dead easy, with a very fluent English-speaking young lady. We were given our tickets and a translation guide and then were taken into the caves. Obviously...More

Took a little bit of detective work to realise the glass elevators to a restaurant on the main street were also for the ruins. Once we were up the steep steps, it was a lovely set of ruins with signs in both Dutch and English....More

We started with the guided cave tour. The cave has a long-storied history and too many hidden treasures within it to count. It was a working cave; rock from inside was used to build many of the homes in the Valkenburg area. Later on, the...More

Just hop on the hill, enjoy the view and learn about the history of this little town. Very kind reception employee, good information. When the weather is fine, you really need to do this. When you leave, have a nice cocktail at the bar and...More

Valkenburg is quite a pleasant small town in E. Holland. A key attraction (for us) was the Christmas market in the caves. Very different. Enjoyable. Worth the effort if you like Christmas markets & are in the vicinity.

I have been to both, and while both are excellent, Cologne has more appeal I think because it is held next to the cathedral. I also don't recall having Glu Wine at the Dutch Market. I have not used either coach line.
