We were four friends visiting Merida and had dinner at Arco de Trajano based on recommendations. The pork we had was tender and tasty, but what about vegetables? The risotto we had tasted OK, but it was slushy, almost like a soup. For dessert - a fantastic cheesecake, a mojito sorbet which turned out to be a drink, and a chocolate fondant that actually was chocolate ice cream. Something must have been lost in translation.
We selected the white and red wine recommended by the restaurant. A great choise!

We thought this was a great way to sit and chill at a nice bar area while steeping our visit in Roman ruins - central in the town and to hotels and right next to good contemporary bars ;-)

There’s some dialogue on the internet saying that historians are debating the authenticity of this arch as being a true Trajan’s Arch. My personal opinion is that, while most true arches were very elaborate monuments, there’s a possibility this particular Trajan’s Arch needed to be built in expediency. In other words, if it were one of the first most important things built, it might have been acceptable to build such a rudimentary arch. A more elaborate replacement arch might have been planned, but just never came to fruition.

We chose 4 tapas dishes. More than enough, really high quality and great service. Young energetic staff who were attentive but not smothering, courteous and smiley. And the service was speedy. Highly recommend a lunchtime (well, 2.00pm) visit.

Very interesting how they were able to create this so many years ago. It's great to see how well it has been preseved and kept in place.

Quite impressive Roman arch and definitely beautifully preserved. This should be part of a walk including the Roman Ruins which are not far.

As such arches go it is rather modest in scale. It nevertheless is a reminder of life back in Augusta Emerita, the Roman name for Merida. It must have dazzled in its day, covered in marble.

Another impressive monument you can just find out while walking around Mérida. The town is full of them and you’re never tired appreciating them.

Due to its city center location do stop by for a quick look. Not too much to see other than the arch itself, most of the adornments have been lost.

Although the Arch is not among the top roman remains in Merida, it’s interesting for its dimension and for being located in the heart of the city. Enjoy!
