Today, Easter, it was closed so we could only see the exterior from behind the gate. At least the walk from Manfredonia was pleasant enough

This was certainly the highlight of visiting Manfredonia. There is not much I can add to the already glowing comments. It is a place not to be missed. Would be interesting to see it at night.

A glowing golden stone church from the 11th to 12th century and a wire art installation of the older church next to it make this a unique site to visit. The artist made a wire suggestion of a church complete with figures on top of the ruins of a very early building. Plus there are even earlier (from Roman times) ruins on the site as well and an intact mosaic floor. There are informative placards that I have English on them, free parking, and admission is also free. The personnel there were friendly and informative. (Also some very cute cats roaming around.)

Santa Maria di Siponto is a lovely Romanesque church with simple lines and Islamic influences. The archeological site consists of the ruins of a 250AD Paleochristian basilica with a semi circular apse and mosaic pavement, plus the partially excavated remains of ancient Sipontium.
Since last year, the space occupied by the basilica has been transformed into a magnificent sculpture, bult right onto the foundations. The installation is made of layers of wire mesh that overlap and intersect, reclaiming the space and volume of a structure that no longer exists. The structure looks like a hologram of the original church, creating an almost 'ghostly' effect. It is truly breathtaking, and the basilica almost seems to be resurrected from the ruins.
The site is a bit out of the way unless you are going to Monte Sant'Angelo, Manfredonia, or the Gargano. Worth a detour for sure! It even has nice new bathrooms! Buon Viaggio, Cristina

It's a very fascinating site, well managed and full of information and description panels, both for the interesting ancient part and for the contemporary monumental metal net structure, beside the Medieval Church. Here, history and art melt in a unique landmark. You can catch this peculiar effect with your eyes or with your camera. If you change your position, the effect changes from the most scenografic shadow effetc to the contemporary light-effect. Describing is reductive, It has to be experienced.
