Very unusual synagogue

Interesting little place. It shuts at 1pm. We made it by 1 minute. Its only small and resembles an antiques shop with its chandeliers and what looked lime Chinese willow patterned floor tiles.

This was a great little synagogue, the oldest in India, which has been restored and turned into a small museum. The explanations are very good, and I am happy to see that it is in a good state.

All the chandeliers, the sheer age of this place, the fact that it was in "Jew Town" proper, so neat! Practically free (maybe 5 or 10 rupees?) but a great part of the walk through Mattancherry and Jew Town. Surrounded by lovely shops.

I recommend all those interested in Jewish history to visit this resurrected synagogue of cochin Jews in Chendamangalam. The oldest hebrew tablet dating nearly 600 years can be viewed. The synagogue has been restored by the Govt of India with help from friends. The cemetery is neglected. The house of the most famous Cochini Jew in Israel mr bezalel eliyahu... More

A narrow entry, an unruly crowd and a least interested reception welcomes you to the Synagogue. Little effort has been made to make it a tourist-friendly place.

It has some ancient architecture and information of early Jews in India. For the 5 rs entry, it is worth going here, also because you do not need much time here

It is the oldest synagogue in Kochi (original 1568 rebuilt 1664) but hardly the 'world' as quoted elsewhere. It's a hotchpotch of styles with Cantonese floor tiles and Belgium lighting. The small Jewish congregation (currently just 7) means that services are no longer held in the building. A very small entrance fee gives you access to the synagogue, a small... More
