- Janet W136 contributionsAlready planning to return!!We stayed at the Thawale Lodge and had the best time … so wish we could have stayed longer. It would have been good to have a day to just sit on the beautiful terrace, read a book and watch the animals come and go to the waterhole. Within minutes of us arriving, a herd of kudu came to graze close by, and then an entire herd of elephants came to the waterhole. They were so close, we got wonderful photos and really enjoyed just being with such magnificent creatures. There were a couple of cute babies too. Something to bear in mind is that the game rides ares shorter here than in Zambia, just two hours in the morning and three (I think) in the evening. My friend and I negotiated extra hours, and that was well worth it … made it a lot less rushed. We had superb sightings of cheetah (a little distant, on the riverbank, but still a thrill), and giraffes, my favourites, plus all the other regulars. All thanks to our fabulous guide and driver Samuel, a fount of all knowledge of the natural world, and brimming with as much enthusiasm as us. It was a joy to be with him. Our room was close to the dining/sitting/patio area, so we still had a view of the waterhole. We had a very attractive terrace, and the room was spacious and very clean. We were thrilled with it. After Flatdogs in Zambia, we were surprised that there wasn’t an extensive restaurant menu!! But of course, Flatdogs is exceptional. Then again, we really enjoyed our meals at Majete, and the staff catered for us vegetarians very well. You certainly won’t go hungry! Talking of the staff, we must recommend Jayne and Mary Grace. What lovely people. We were sad to have to say goodbye after just two nights, but we are already planning our return. There’s a swimming pool and little shop at the main gate, which is a ten minute drive away. We went for an hour or so, courtesy of Samuel. The restaurant at the pool looked very good. The shop has basics like soap and deodorant, and a range of safari shirts. They’re quite expensive but Samuel explained that their sale really benefits the park and the local community so I bought a very nice extra shirt, which I’m wearing as I write this. It’s good quality with a great Majete logo. Note there is no WiFi at the lodge. So, total recommendation from me. Go to Majete.Visited April 2022Written 17 May 2022
- NoëlleMalawi37 contributionsStay at Thawale Lodge (now AP run)We had a wonderful stay at Thawale Lodge. The property was taken over by African parks a few months ago and you can really see the positive changes they’ve already put in place! Having stayed there previously I could instantly see and feel the difference this time around, particularly in their attention to detail and organization. The two managers, Kelly and Wayne, were absolutely fantastic and incredibly welcoming. They are really excited about their roles at Thawale and African parks and it was inspiring to witness such passion for both hospitality and wildlife conservation. They were super accommodating, friendly and well informed. The food was delicious and the meal ideas interesting and well executed (from tasting the food alone it was clear Wayne is a trained chef!). The rooms were immaculate and very comfortable- often comfort is secondary when staying in a game park setting, but not at Thawale, the mattress, pillows and bedding was all of a wonderful standard which made our stay even more luxurious. We will certainly be returning and have already booked in our next stay. If you haven’t stayed at Thawale since AP took over, I would hugely encourage you to take a trip- you won’t be disappointed!Visited October 2020Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 October 2020
- ManjoloMalawiTravelLilongwe, Malawi182 contributionsAnimal Central! We visited Majete in July 2019 and stayed at Thawale Camp under the management of African Parks. The hospitality was superb! What's so special about this place is the waterhole they have which basically brings all the animals right to you! While we also loved the game drive activities, just sitting at our room and at reception was such a treat. We can highly recommend chalet #6 which is on the edge of the camp next to a path that so many elephants walk and also has the most luxurious and fantastic indoor/outdoor bathroom. We really enjoyed the candlelit dinners next to the waterhole since many animals also came at night to drink. Our booking was full board and we enjoyed all our meals. Our guide Liwonde was wonderful and went out with us early on a morning game drive to track down lions we had heard all night. We definitely cannot wait to return here. Well done African Parks in restoring Majete and now running Thawale. We can't wait to return!Visited July 2021Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 October 2021

Really lovely and cosy lodge at Thawale with great service and comfy tents. Nothing like waking up to an elephant grazing outside your tent! Saw Wild Dogs amongst other wildlife. The food and drink was great too.

A gem! Thwale lodge was wonderful. The people were gracious and safari amazing. Our guide for the safari tours was so knowledgeable about all of the animals. We saw elephants, cheetah, lions, baboons among so many other animals. Loved it.
Truly a fabulous experience and a must go in Malawi.

Chikwawa was quite hot, and it was nice to be welcomed to cold towels and a cool glass of juice at Thawale Lodge. We stayed in a tented chalet, very clean with a cute welcome note on the bed. We also enjoyed all our meals, the food was very tasty and well-presented. The evening game drive was very exciting, we got to spot some zebras, giraffes, crocodiles, waterbucks, and hippos just to mention a few. We were treated to a wonderful sundowner, some snacks, and a drink overlooking the sunset and shire river midway through our game drive and got back to the lodge to a campfire. I slept like a baby that night missing out on the lion’s roars through the night only to wake up to some prints of their paws right outside our tent! Can't wait to go back.

We spent two nights at Thawale Lodge whilst visiting Majete Wildlife Reserve. We had a tented room that was comfortable and looked out onto the waterhole. The main lodge building was lovely, and we enjoyed eating outside by the waterhole, which was frequently visited by animals, including the local elephant. The staff were very friendly and the level of service was excellent. We had four game drives in total and saw elephants, lions, wild dogs, giraffes, zebras, cheetahs and many antelopes and birds. It was a fantastic experience. The amazing is that a few years back this place was decimated by poaching but through careful management it is now a delight to explore

Stayed two nights at Thawale Lodge. Good accommodation and food although only a fixed menu. Staff friendly and helpful and a timely free laundry service. Unfortunately animal viewing was limited. Out of two evening and two morning drives failed to see any lions or giraffes and only one elephant. Hippos only seen at a distance. On the plus side did manage for the first time to see a leopard and snatch a photograph of it disappearing into the undergrowth. Sunset drinks ambience a bit disappointing when compared with other park visits made previously.

You must be lucky to see animals. Thick bush & the game drives are only for 2 hours. Not worth it at all. Authorities must offer longer staying hours in the park. Very Disappointing

Enjoyed a 36 hour stay here. Stayed at Thawale Lodge in September 2021. The hosts, Jeff and Tiffany, were great. I was nervous about being by myself but they included me in conversation and their love of the animals and conservation. I had terrific viewing (Day Game Drive, Evening Game Drive, River Game Drive) and amazing animal sightings at the water hole (elephant and lion at night).
You have options for day visits, self guided game drives (need 4x4 vehicle), camping at the campsite and staying at the lodge. There is a pool. There is a gift shop. I would highly recommend a 2 night minimum stay (which I didn't do).

Could someone help me with their prices. How much is it for a ride around the reserve?

Blantyre, Malawi22 contributions
If you want to do a game drive with the a guide on their parks vehicle it is USD 25.00 per person. If you want to enter the park and drive around the park in your own car then their are several prices, a price for Malawians, residents and an overseas visitor. As Ia resident I pay approx MK 17 000.00 which is the cost for my wife and myself and our car.

Hello :) I wondered if anyone can offer some advice on how to plan a trip to Majete from Blantyre? (where to find a driver, how much it transport to/from costs etc). And also what the wildlife spotting will be like in January/February? Thank you!

I was picked Jp bay the tour operator. I think you also could rent a car and drive yourself or arrange a transfer. Sorry no idea hoe much that would cost. It will be hot and humid in that period. I was there in April and we spotted quite a lot of animals.

We are visiting the Reserve in mid-September....Looking for advice on which of the activities to select. Morning game drive or afternoon game drive (best chance to see the most animals?); boat trip; or bush walk? (What is the primary focus of the bush walk - largely birding or??) Thanks in advance!
