I never thought of myself as a gullible person. I always thought hotel managers were there to ensure customers return, to establish a clientele.
To my total surprise, I found out differently.
Entering the site of the Prismos Basalticos, in Santa Maria Regla, I was offeried a room for 1,ooo pesos. This included the entry cost of 150 pesos per day. Thus, I was paying only 700 pesos for a room for a night. This, I thought, was a little expensive for Mexico, but, what the hell, let’s splurge. And when I saw my room, I was happy for my decision. The cabana was truly beautiful from the outside and I couldn’t wait to see the inside. (see photos) .
The inside was also very beautiful. Until I started to see details. I couldn’t believe my eyes.
The cabana wasn’t finished.
1-The wall, in he bathroom wasn’t finished. The ceramic was stopped about 2/3 of the way.
2-The washbasin had no room for toiletries. If you look at the picture, it certainly wasn’t for lack of space. We had to put our stuff on the floor!!!!
3-The light over the washbasin wasn’t working. Of course, it wasn’t connected which explained this.
4-There wasn’t a mantelpiece over the fireplace. The supports were there but not the mantelpiece.
5-It was really cold outside. When I asked if there was warmth to be provided, I was told a fire would be made in the fireplace. This fire lasted 2 hours and therefore, we were cold for the rest of the night. I didn’t take a shower in the morning because the room was too col.
6-The fireplace had no protection (ie grill to prevent sparks from burning the floor), no instruments to stoke or andirons to support the fire, in fact, the persons who prepared the fire pushed the wood in a corner of the fireplace to prevent problems and, therefore, this fireplace gave practically no heat whatsoever.
7-There was 1 light in the room, and you had to get up to close or open it. It was so feeble, you couldn’t read from it. Thank god I use a tablet.
8-Of course, a fire is a fire and you can always sit in front of it to look at it. Not here. There were no chairs in the room. When I complained, 2 chairs were brought. Just look at them.
9-There were no glasses in the room. I asked for some and was provided with 2. (foam glasses, fit for a 5 star room)
I have photos for all my other criticisms. There was no room to put them.
10-The good part was that you could use the cable for the TV to dry your clothes on since the cable was hanging in the room.
11-There was a control for the electricity. Of course, someone forgot to finish painting around it.
12-The connection for the tv was really nice. Green is one of my favourite colors. This was a female plug in.
13-One of the thing that bothered me was the lack of hangers in the space reserved for hanging clothes. So I asked for hangers. They gave me 2. 1 plastic, 1 wire.
14-The parking area was also left unfinished. Why should it be different from the rest of the accommodation?
15-One of the most interesting part of the accommodation was that you couldn’t leave it. The entrance to the cabana site was locked. You couldn’t leave. Ha! Will you say. All you had to do was call for them to open the gate. Wrong! No phone in the room!!!!
16-Of course, we complained to the manager. She asked that we write our complaints and send them to her. Then she suggested a restaurant where we could have breakfast. The menu had no prices. Now this is perfect if you want to charge different prices depending on the customer. For example, if the customers come from Mexico, you charge one price. If they come form another country, you can charge according to what you want. Like I said, pluck the pigeon.
17-Oh! I forgot. We were told that there were many restaurants on the site. Of course, we were not told that they all close at 7 o’clock. And that the nearest restaurant after that time would be 20 minutes down the road. So we went to the nearest convenient store (the guard had called so it wouldn’t close before we went there) and purchased our supper. Piece of chees, crackers, beer and one ice cream cone. Gastronomy at it's best.
18-You will try to excuse the owners based on the fact that this “cabana” was just completed.
To this, I answer two things.
A-If you want to rent an unfinished unit, you tell the prospective customer and you charge him accordingly. You certainly do not charge the price of a finished cabana.
B-This unit was left unfinished for a number of weeks if not months. There was a fixture in the middle of the bathroom that was not working. The guard changed the light bulb and it worked fine. How long does it take for a light bulb to burn?
Will I ever stay at that site again? No!
Will I ever recommend to stay at this site to a friend? No!
Too bad. The prismos are Worth seing.

The "prismas" can be seen either from above or at ground level. I definitely recommend to explore the magnificent Santa María Regla Hacienda, which has a secret passage to the waterfall with the prismas at ground level. This experience is much more private and peaceful.

The views from different vantage points of Las Prismas and the surrounding valley and mountainside are stunning. The views of the rock formations and water falls were amazing.
The North side of the walkway allows different angles of the formations in conjunction with views of the waterfalls and surrounding areas. The south side has impressive views of the water falls also, but for picture purposes with fewer people, the north side seems to have better picture opportunities.
There are zip lines for those interested and simply a breath-taking experience.

This place is not only a nature wonder, but also a cultural place.
It links the mining history of the old Mexico with the natural paths of water.
The place is getting improvements too. They are adding more "features" to this park around the area.
There are a few waterfalls, the area looks like a canyon full of these "basaltic" prisms that extends around the chasms. The river forms and follows the lava rocks.
There is a bridge connecting both sides, you can also go down in the chasm to get nearby the waterfalls.
Only thing is, you are discouraged to touch the water or even get inside the river and nearby lake. You wonder why? because some morons decided to exit their sewage of their housing development right straight into the lake river path. Leading then to the basaltic prisms area. While the water does not smell, it does have a murky green colour.
There are a few restaurants, snacks, and a ton of small stores.
Bring a DSLR or a decent camera.
Note that they charge the entrance. Includes bathrooms and other amenities.
Note that the climate depends entirely of weather.
During normal day, the sun is very hot but the temps feels fair. Hovering between 18C to 25C.
If there is wind or cloudy weather. Temps will go down quickly to around 8C to 20C.

This is a wonderful and interesting place to visit if you are in or near Pachuca. This "recreation area" is clustered around a small canyon of basalt columns that were formed by volcanic eruption. The highlight is being able to walk along a rim path and down stairs to get into the canyon. There are two small waterfalls that tumble over the columns and into the canyon. Note that the waterfalls are "artificial", created by water that is channeled into the canyon by viaducts. Still, knowing this does not diminish the beauty of these waterfalls. The site is open Monday-Friday from 9am to 6pm and Saturday/Sunday from 8am to 7pm. It is popular with couples and families. Entrance fee is 50 pesos per person. There are sports fields, swimming pools and variety of other activities (some for additional fee). There is a good selection of souvenir shops and restaurants, with most serving locally sourced fresh trout. There are cabanas for rent for overnight stays. The pictures I have included in my review are from the brochure available at the site. More information can be found at www.losprismasbasalticos.com.
There are two ways to get here. The quickest and easiest is from Pachuca, which is only about 30 minutes away. From Pachuca, take highway 105 northeast towards and past Mineral del Monte. Look for the exit towards Huasca/Santa Maria Regla. There is a sharp, 90 degree right hand turn just before you get to Huasca, where you will see signs pointing to the Prismos Basalticos. From this turn you will go straight on a cobblestone road which ends right at the entrance gates to the site. If you are coming from highway 132D (Mexico City - Tulancingo), look for the exit for Huasca/Acatlan. Drive through the small town of Acatlan, then follow the signs toward Huasca. As you get to Santa Maria Regla, you will see signs for a Parque Ecoturistica, at which point, you will turn right off of the main road. Follow the signs into town, but don't turn off the road. Instead, drive into town and past the small center plaza. A few hundred meters after the main square, you will make a quick right turn, passing another sign for the Parque Ecoturistica. Ignore this sign too and keep driving straight, until the cobblestone road ends, about another 2 kilometers. At this point, you should see signs for the Prismos Basalticos, where you will turn left onto a dirt road that leads to the entrance of the site. Santa Maria Regla also has a hacienda for overnight stays (http://www.haciendaderegla.com.mx/).

This area was well worth the drive and the “expensive” admission. That attraction is still cheap in North American terms, but more pricy than other locations within Mexico. We went first thing in the morning, so no stores or shops were open - but there were also no people - which is exactly how we like it. There is a great series of trails to show off the amazing lava formations and the canyon. There are bridges to cross and play sets for children. You can make your way to the base of the waterfall as well, which is simply fantastic. We really enjoyed our time here and I would recommend it! Want to see a video of our adventure here? Prismas Balsalticos are some hour and a half from Pachuca. The road for most part is decent. When you arrive there is a big gate and they charge 100MX per person to enter. It’s a property on top of the canyon with prismas with a lot of souvenir shops, zip line, lookouts onto the prismas. Too touristy for us. If we knew we would have skipped it and when some 5 min further to Santa Maria Regla. The entrence is 85MX per person (discounted from consumption). Here you can roam an old hacienda from 18 century and get very close to the prismas with a gorgeous view! Highly recommended!

You really have to see it. Then of course there is a whole bunch of... energy in this highly magical spot in Hidalgo, not far from Mineral del Monte, a truly magical Mexican mining town.
Try to picture 120 foot giant faceted basalt crystals lining a beautiful little green canyon... better yet, google it. The pictures still won't do it justice.
It is off the beaten trail, so prepare to wait for a cab or transport if you are not driving, but the area has been turned into a well protected park, very clean with services including swimming pools at your disposal if you want to spend a day here. Cab service from Mineral del Monte is good and inexpensive.
Mere words really don't do it justice. You gotta go.

This place appears to be interesting judging from the pictures but the reality is that you can stand at any one point overlooking the rock formations and see all of it from that point. This attraction is really best for a family with young children who might appreciate it more (be more easily impressed). Furthermore, there's a large grassy area perfect for the family to picnic on and the children to run around in.

The entrance is about 100 pesos per person which in my opinion is good enough
I am not sure if they accept debit, credit, or Amex
You can bring food inside, since they don't check your car . STRONGLY SUGGEST TO BRING WATER AND FOOD FROM OUTSIDE TO SAVE SOME PENNIES inside the facilities, you will find this type of bungalows where you will find goodies for tourists which other than the basaltic prisms, I wouldn't get one of the others
YES they sell beers
The bathroom its just for emergencies (toilet paper its around 25 us cents or
5.00 MXN pesos)
The facilities just in general looks awesome and even the railing looks like a basaltic prism. which makes sense !!
Besides the experience and the Instagram photo .. I felt kind of boring ... I mean .. yes they have this zipline (extra cost) or this horse ride (Extra cost) , and restaurants, but just for me I spend 1 HOUR and that was it.
I wouldn't suggest to spend all day long .. I do believe that 2 or 3 hours would be more like a realistic experience
If someone would invite me again I wouldn't COME BACK!
Is it a must? YES
but sincerlly its kind of like .. ok I have my picture lets go somewhere else.
the water is not blue, and you can't swim (obviously)
yes tons of people, forget to be in a unique place surrounded by the birds
