Udayagiri caves , under the ASI now , are better cared for.
Located approximately 15 Km from Vidisha , it takes about 20 minutes to reach.
Once there it's a one hour ' tour '.
Driving further ( 3 Km) you reach Udavagri jungle resort ( mp tourism ) .
The resort is a surprise with neat &clean rooms ( a/c, satellite TV, WC, geyser, spacious),
Cordial staff. Boat club.

The caves are four kms from Vidisha and !3kms from Sanchi. There are many caves in this cave complex and we need to climb to see some caves. But some of the caves can be seen at the ground level. There is a very huge cave and we can go inside and see the big hall and inside is a small Garbagudi. The place inside is a little dark, a torch would be helpful. Some inscriptions in one of the caves dates back to Chandra Gupta II,4-5 A.D.
The caves are numbered. The first cave has frontage has a roof and portico. Many caves have pillars, long portico and pillared hall.
Cave 5 a massive carving of Vishnu in his Varaha Avatar. Also is the statue of reclining Vishnu. These caves represents the rich Gupta Architecture.

Udaigiri or Hill of Sunrise is situated in Sunpura and Udaygiri villages of Vidisha district about 8-9 kms from Vidisha town. There are nearly 20 rock cut caves in this sandstone hill. Beautiful carvings of Hindu Gods adorn the walls of most of the caves. The site has important inscriptions of the Gupta dynasty belonging to the reigns of Chandragupta II (c. 375-415) and Kumaragupta I (c. 415-55).[2] In addition to these remains, Udayagiri has a series of rock-shelters and petroglyphs, ruined buildings, inscriptions, water systems, fortifications and habitation mounds, all of which have been only partially investigated.
The most beautiful of these are the Lying Vishnu & Boar headed Varha image of Vishnu. Then there is one Shivling with Parvati & third eye on it said to be the only shivling having a lady image on it.
Must visit for a lover of history & ancient art.

The Varaha relief is splendid and the early ekamukhalinga is also very beautiful. We know the Gupta emperor was here in A.D. 401. Makes you feel very close to classical India. An out of the way site you shouldn't miss.

If you have already visited Ajantha and Ellora, then Udayagiri may not be exciting to you. However, if you are interested in Gupata period rock carvings, this is a place to visit. Another reason why you need to visit this place is that the maximum time you may spend at Sanchi will be 3 -4 hours. There will be an ample time left for a traveler to spend in other attractions, Since there are no other attractions closer to Sanchi, These caves will be an ideal place to visit. It will not take more than 30-45 minutes to cover the whole caves. The planing to visit could be made in two ways. One may get off from the train at Videesha and visit caves before going to Sanchi. It is 8 KMs from the Videesha town. No public transport and you have to either hire an auto rickshaw(three wheeler) or a car. This is the negative point. If you come after visiting Sanchi, then it is 18 KMs from sanchi. I am not aware whether there is a short cut by passing Videesha. In that case, distance may be less than 18 KMs. Many of the statues have been destroyed by invaders. But the carvings of Visnu in Varaha avatar and reclining Vishnu are great creations. Other caves also have small statues and remnants of destroyed statues. A couple of Jain caves are closed due to security reasons after there have been rock falls. The guys employed by the archaeological survey of India will give a good narration of the history in Hindi. But if you are an English speaker, you may need to read about the cave before the visit. On line descriptions are available with the wikipedia article being more descriptive. Tough it is not upto the standards of ajantha Ellora, this is something that you may fancy given the abundance of time you are bound to have after visiting Sanchi.

The word Udaygiri, means the 'Hills of Sunrise'. In fact it is worth its name because it is built in such a way so as to receive the very first rays of the rising Sun. Udaygiri is a well known for its wonderful caves, which are found at about at 4 km from the town of Vidisha and at 31 KM is Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh in India. These caves were carved somewhere during 4th to 5th century A.D, during the time of Chandragupta II, a well known name in Indian history. This is a marvellous specimen of Gupta art. The entrance itself is a grand scene. The complexity and skill of the artwork of those days’ artists are superb. It had reached the peak of brilliance by the artisans of those days.
There all together as I saw 20 caves. All the caves are given numerical numbered consistent with the arrangement in which they were unearthed. These caves are in a row in continuity and more spacious. The interesting caves are Cave no, 4, 6, and 19 and few others. You can see the sanctums are bigger and luxurious. Caves 1 and 9, in particular are remarkable. Cave 1 is a prominent cave as it has a front modified as a natural projection of rock and impressive. You can see number of statues including those of Lord Vishnu and Lord Varaha (or the Boar) another Avatar or incarnation of Lord Vishnu in Cave no 5. The portrayal of the Lord Varaha (Boar) in rescuing the Mother Goddess Prithvi (earth) from the cosmic ocean, and holding Her on His tusk is memorable. You should observe its beautifully moulded design at the entrance gateway and the arrangement of continuing the architrave as a twine route around the structure. This is similar to Sanchi stupas where we have to go round the doom appreciating the structural beauty. These caves have dissimilar character that gave Gupta art an exceptional liveliness, vigour and richness of expression.
Udaygiri is a famous tourist attraction in Madhya Pradesh. When you see the rock-cut cave sand large carved out sanctuaries in the hills of sandstone, you may feel as if in a different world altogether. I tell you it is a pleasure for tourists to observe the architecture and sculpture. It is an indication of the grandeur of the Gupta period of Indian history, in these caves (about 20 caves). Whatever one may say about this group of ancient rock-cut caves they are beautifully designed at the entrance. The massive pillars and the artful frontage are weather-beaten by passage of time. Hollow 1 has a frontage get used to out to a common projection of rock. There are four columns that bear the jug and flora devise. The cut fronts and entryways are wonderfully luxurious.
Udaygiri Caves can be reached by air, rail and road. The nearest train station is at Habibganj Junction at 19 km . There are number of Hotels near Habibganj railway station to provide tasty food and good accommodation.
The entry to caves is from 10.00 a m to 5.00 p m and on Saturday and holidays from 10.00 a am to 5.00 p m.
There is one more Udaygiri and Khandagiri the twin hills found at about 7 kms west of Bhubaneswar, the capital city of the state of Orissa in India. They contain historical monuments of King Asoka. The rocks were carved and tunnelled in order to find a multi storied ancient apartment residence of Jain monks. It is also interesting and worth visiting.

he caves of Udayagiri are an exquisite illustration of the local 'Art' form. These were established by Chandragupt Vikramaditya, after defeating Shak's' in the 4th and 5th Century A.D. The primary motive behind the construction of these caves and establishment of the sculptures of different 'deities', dearly seems to be promotion of Jainism' among the common folk. There are in total twenty caves, out of which two are related to 'Jainism' and the rest eighteen to 'Hinduism' directly. On the top of the caves hill remaining of the 'Mauryan', 'Shung and 'Nag' dynasties have been found, which also include 'Buddhist’s Stupas'.

I would describe this place as modest and under explored place. The place with extreme ancient heritage.
Best time to visit should be around afternoon approx.. 3.30 followed by sunset according to me. We watched a lovely sun set from there. It was a full moon day so there was moon already in the sky at 6.00 pm. You shall need a short easy trek to explore the caves. Lovely sculptures takes you back in ancient ages. The caves seem to be less explored hence retains it beauty and rustic feel. Mostly carved in red stone, the beige rustic look of sculpture is sure worth visiting. Lord Vishnu’s Varaha (wild boar) avatar’s (incarnation) depiction is the highlight of the caves. Lord Vishnu is one of the principle deities of Hinduism. Caves have small stone carved temples of different Gods. The top of the cave gives you a mesmerizing view of the town , cold breeze and unforgettable sunset. No entry fees. It is little bit secluded at some points hence stay in groups if possible , couples if visiting, avoid quiet afternoons. It seems to be a safe place but there were no much monitoring hence follow safety norms.

Visited on 6th Jan 2019 with family ( child of 11 yrs)
Bhopal boasts few historical places of significance in its vicinity including Bhojpur Shivling, Bhimbhetka Caves, Udaygiri Caves, Sanchi Stupa and others. I negotiated a 12 hour cab for INR 2500/- for 250 kms and could cover mentioned places. We started the journey at 8.30am in morning and was back by 7.00pm evening. Taxi Driver : Rahul : +91-7987992997
Udaygiri caves is about 9 kms from Sanchi and 55kms from Bhopal, mode of travel is Taxi. the drive is about 1 hr 30 min.
Entry - Free
Parking Available
The Monument can be explored on foot. Family with senior citizens might have to skip few places but this place has significance in Buddhism. Stone carvings and caves are testimony to the times where religious and culture were of utmost importance to the society. Little disappointed as there are few caves which looked more like were small cubicles which could hardly fit a human. However carvings on the stones are amazing
While we visited restoration works were going on so might be of inconvenience to few travellers. the view from top is also nice.
Visit if you have time.
