About
The Stunning 11ft tall Mermaid of the North sits on her rock on the shore of the Seaboard Village of Balintore. Inspired by local folklore she was designed as part of a Sculpture Park celebrating local heritage, Folklore, Faith, Fortitude, Fishing & Four Corners of the World. To visit the Mermaid of the North please continue to the Seaboard Centre where there is ample car parking and take the short walk along the Sculpture Trail. You can have your NC500 Passport stamped with the Mermaid of the North stamp at the Seaboard Centre which is located near to the statue.

- Talia BWinchester, United Kingdom73 contributionsWouldn’t go out of my way by it’s okayIt was nice to look at and stopped to have a look at it. Arts subjective, it’s a statue of a mermaid on a rock, not sure why it has a trip advisor. I walked past it, stopped to look at it for a minute and continued my morning walk along the beach. Might go again tonight on my walk or tomorrow morning. Nice enough, not an all day thing, max 5 minutes. If you are in walkable distance I suggest you go. Don’t travel more than 10 as it’s a small fishing village, it’s small....Visited August 2020Travelled with familyWritten 10 August 2020
- Grays_on_HolidayDerbyshire, United Kingdom882 contributionsWorth the short detourIf planning on travelling up the East coast, worth a short detour to see if you like photography. This sculpture if located on the rocks on the seafront at Balintore. Not a harbour town but a small, residential area. A reasonable amount of parking at the Seaboard Centre nearby which also hosts a good cafe, toilets and a post office. A lovely, short walk from the carpark (5 minutes), over the Scottish pebbles at the shoreline, will lead you to this lovely sculpture. We were also lucky enough to spot dolphins from the shore when we visited in late July. Don't expect lots to see and entertain you in this area, as mentioned, it's a small residential area but if the weather is fine, it's a nice place to sit and eat a picnic and there's a few swings for younger children.Visited July 2022Written 4 September 2022
- Darryn_FewsterEdinburgh, United Kingdom119 contributionsA Mermaid certainly worth a visit! This was an amazing experience and being able to see this majestic lady was lovely. The day was slightly over cast for us but the statue is easy to see from the parking bays. When we were there it was easy to park and we even moved closer, parking at the local pub car park, meaning the walk to the statue, which took all of 5mins slow trundle, was lovely. Once we followed the path down to the beach, I would suggest this for wheelchair users, we were able to walk right up to the statue and have some photos taken.Visited August 2020Written 17 August 2020

Easy to find, plenty of free parking, short walk to the Mermaid. Got to be done if you are on the NC500 route. There is a cafe there across from the car park but it wasn’t open when we went.

Lovely quiet area with a pebbled beach. Nice to see if passing nearby but not really worth going too far out of your way to visit.

Worth a look as the beach is good for rock pools at low tide but I wouldn’t go out of my way to find it. My best advice would be to take a picnic and enjoy the view . The beach is all pebbles but there were lots of birds about so plenty to watch.

Amazing views here. Peaceful area just off the north coast 500 route and a nice view of the water and the Mermaid of the North statue!

I spent some time sunning with the Mermaid of the North. Just up the road is a recreation of a fabulous standing stone in a field. It was a beautiful sunny day and I enjoyed the mermaid's attitude.

Its a statue of a mermaid - best visited when the tide is in, otherwise a bit underwhelming. Good car parking but in Novemeber the nearby cafe hours are shorter. I guess its a bit different, though I had expected a picturesque village too

Hideous carbuncle ruins a perfectly nice rock on the seashore and interrupts a super sea view. Cute legend, but no need for such a grotesque interpretation of the central character, who looks like something out of an old, very old, cheap cartoon.

what you see is what you get, literally a cute statue in the sea! I loved it, we camped close by and had a wander to take a photo, job done! :)

When was she erected

Hi, thank you for your enquiry. The original Mermaid of the North was erected in 2007 and she was made from wood and resin which unfortunately begun to crack and let in some water. The current Mermaid of the North (which is identical to the original) was erected in the summer of 2014.
