This place is really nice to visit the village is very beautiful, and the Synagogue makes you have a small idea how important was the jewish comunity for this place. When you arrive in Zhovkva you have a personal feeling that makes you come back to the past and have this little idea how horrible was in the WWII. The City Guide Mrs. Olga is a really Adorable person that shows as for inside the synagogue and around. If you likes to discovery this part of europe or if you are travelling to LVIV take the bus and go to this small village it gonna makes you really surprised.

Old Synagogue closed and fenced off. Sad remains of the tragic history of the german brutality during WW2. Next to a few shops, cafe and local bus station. 30/45 car drive from Lviv.

The synagogue is currently in a very bad, almost ruinous condition and the most important part of the facade is fenced off, the windows are broken and there is probably no interior furnishing to speak of. The colour photo seen in guide books is thus too old and does not reflect the synagogue´s present state. Nonetheless it is still possible to get an impression of its former glory and its pretty pink-white design & since it is of high historical value and situated right between Zhovkva´s bus station and the central square with most of the town´s major sights - a walk which takes about 5 mins - take a look at it anyway. One can only hope that a thorough restoration will eventually take place; it seems to be a valuable building and with time it could become a museum in itself. I noticed that the uppermost part of the facade had recently been painted, but it will take years to restore everything in a historically correct way and there was no sign of such work being planned right now.

It was built at time of King Jan Sobieski, at the fortress line.
Now old walls, with top like crown are looks like a small piece of Pallatinium hill in town. Deep at underground level, lot of pots with taller, silver, Gould are possibly. Nobody knows about it. Because gofer steel fence around is.

Among the first defense synagogue buildings of this sort, shows some unique elements of decor as well as internal and external construction. In spite of being in a very bad condition nowadays, still is very impressive. It is unfortunate that local authorities do not understand, or do not care (il although I hope they do) what a peril they have in the city

The synagogue is surrounded by sheet metal walls and it is not possible to visit it. It is in pretty rough shape and you can only see the outside walls that are not shielded by the surrounding barricades.

It may be the last time to see this building, as it's state of preservation is just terrible. All fenced out, with large parts of plaster folling down. It looks like it would be gone sooner than you think, unless some huge investments are done. Which is rather dissappointing, as this was one of the largest deffencive baroque-romanesque synagogues in Europe.

Would anyone have the details of the tour guide if Zhovkva, Ms Olga, mentioned on this forum? I would be very grateful so that I can contact her regarding a guided tour.
Thank you!
