Štanjel Castle is one of the largest castle buildings in the Karst and a dominant part of the old settlement.
Originally a much smaller medieval building owned by the Counts of Gorizia, it was inherited by the Habsburgs in the early 16th century and given to the feudal Counts of Cobenzl. With the exception of the brief Venetian occupation and possession of the Coronini family of Kromberk, the Cobenzli ruled Stanjel until 1810, when the family became extinct. The commemorative plaques testify that the Cobenzli castle began to be remodeled in 1583, and today it was given a Baroque-Renaissance appearance around 1661.
During the First World War, a hospital for officers was set up in the castle. In the period between World War I and WWII, the castle was transformed into the central space of social events by the idea and merit of Max Fabiani.

This lovely town is intriguing and full of mystery.
The castle and surrounding town was raised to the ground in 1944, and the local people terrorised. Why did this happen?
If your a 'light on' tourist who wants to be passive and entertained, then you wont find it at Stanjel.
If you love history and and particularly interested in the world wars, this place is worth a visit.
Also, the countryside is beautiful and a short drive to the Lipica stud farm.
Read up before you go.
I'm going back this summer!!

We are about 10mn drive from Stanjel so we decided to go in the evening. Nice and quiet, lovely views. We wondered in the little streets. Car park, few on the side roads but payable via ap. We found out that the ticket machine is on the main road just opposite the castle. First hr free, then 1 euro per hour. Get your ticket and then walk back to your car. Not sure how chaotic it is during the day. But do stop if you are passing by

It is a must stop in this region - best preserved medieval town worth to explore for an hour or more. Ask at the infrmation office for directions. But it is small and not hard to find best parts. Make sure to go to the impressive Fabiani garden - fountains, replica of Venice bridge etc. Nice walks also around Stanjel...

Impressive... this is your first impression when you look at it from the road nr.204. Leave your car on the parking place, no charge ! Then start walking, once you passed the main entrance, walk at random and you'll see how it looks like living in a Middle Age castle, nowadays...You'll stumble over Storzeva Galerija, which is an old house, the only one left with a stone roof; it was restored in 2006 and it's a small exhibition of old things and paintings.
Keep walking, disregarding the suggested directions and you'll find the Square Tower; climb the stairs ( there is a restroom, too ) and you'll get an amazing view of the castle surroundings. The Tower is open from Tuesday to Friday, from 09.00 a.m. to 03.00 p.m.; Saturdays and Sundays from 10.00 a.m. to 06.00 p.m. ; Monday, the Tower is closed. Next to it, there is a Tourist Information Bureau.
Hungry ? Thirsty ? there is a nice terrace in the castle, offering the best Italian coffee - Illy -. Do visit the castle, it's definitely worth your time. At no charge.

The castle is to be found in the village with the similar name; it's not in Sezana. There are direction arrows or otherwise, use your GPS.
Have a nice visit ! :)

Already when you are driving to Stanjel and you are watching it from the car...it is something to see. Then, there is a free parking available (it wasnt full on the day we visited Stanjel) and you are already in this lovely small village. Locals are selling all kind of things by the road (coins, laces, old objects, cherries, wine...) and here our lovely journey started. We bought few pieces of natural soap with lavanda scent and asked for the best starting position for our walk. We startet in "forest" under the castle and had a nice walk there. The way tool us to the Ferrari garden, which is very small, but sooo nice! Everybody is taking pictures on the small bridge, so we also did it.We were very slow, because our daughter is 1.5 y.o. and was walking on her own, looking for flowers, watching fishes....I bealive we spend an hour until here (but it is a short walk on a flat terrain). Then we passed trough a tower and came directly to the honey selling (self service) point. We were looking each other if that really works that way, but then took some honey and a postcard, left the money (im a special yar) and left. This honey shop you can find in section Shopping i think...So we finally came back close to the castle entrance, but we asked locals for the way, because we didnt have a map and werent quite sure. There was a castle restauran - with live music and a lot of visitors and again some sellers in front of. on that point we bought first homegrown cherries and slowly took way down to the parking. We didnt enter the castle, but we had very nice walk.

Štanjel is one of the most wonderful places you can visit in Slovenia. Nothing much is going on there, bust just the thought of all the history happening there is astounding. You can walk on the old narrow streets, take a stroll around a Venus' garden and climb the tower. You can even have a cup of fairly decent coffee in the Štanjel Castle or take a look at an exhibition or two. Highly recommended.

The walled old town and citadel of Stanjel is interesting, scenic, and very quiet. It seems to be slowly being renovated with many buildings currently undergoing renovation, others still dilapidated, and others already renovated. We saw a small guesthouse and there is a place to eat but it was closed and empty when we were there in June 2019. There are nice views from it and one can spend some time exploring the narrow streets and buildings in peace and quiet. We saw almost no people in it at all and only one other couple who were tourists. We were all by ourselves almost the whole time we were there. In some ways, it reminded us of a smaller, quieter version of Pocitelj, in Bosnia-Herzegovina, which he had visited a couple years before, but even far less developed for tourism. Right now, it is very much off the beaten path but in some years it could well become a fairly busy tourist stop.
