Having heard about how crowded the trekking villages of sapa have become, we contacted the Handspan agency and arranged a two day trek with village stay in the Ngoc Son/ngo luong Reserve. This ares has only recently been opened to tourism and during our time there we saw no other westerners. The family we stayed with and all the villagers we met were incredibly friendly, and not one hawker in sight. Please pass this on only to respectful travelers and don't spoil the experience.

As an expat living in Hanoi, I have visited twice the Ngoc Son- Ngo Luong reserve: once when I was pregnant and the second time recently with my 1yr son. In both occasions, the people in the reserve look after us very kindly. This is the best option for those wanting to learn about the culture and the lifestyle of the ethnic groups in the countryside.

The trip to the reserve is listed as alternative tour by Handspan or ACA travel which also organizes trips to the reserve. You can tailor the trip to your interest from trekking and bathing in waterfalls to bird watching or rice harvesting (in season). The warm welcome at the homestays of the local villagers and the breathtaking landscape made our stays both times quite unforgettable.

This ecotourism place set up as part of a development cooperation programme that was very successful and it is starting to get more and more attention. I highly recommend this getaway to people visiting Vietnam for the first time as well as to Vietnamese and expats wanting to get the true flavour of the Vietnamese luscious nature and rich ethnic heritage.

This is a trip you won't likely forget. Not too heavy hiking through amazing surroundings being welcomed by the nicest people in their houses, drink some tea, ricewine and have fantastic lunches and dinners in their beautiful houses. We did not have the time to go to sapa but still wanted to do nice trekking and spend the night in a home stay. Due to the rather short travel time from Hanoi this is an excellent alternative. Can't compare it with sapa since we did not go there. We only met 2 other tourists during the 2 day trip. Would recommend this to everyone since it gave me fantastic experience meeting the nicest Vietnamese people.
Booked via Handspan (routes less traveled section).

We did 3 days there, you should come on summer, visit Mu Stream. It is pure and beautiful, our lovely trip was stayed with local people on Silt house, ate and cooked with them. They were very friendly, showed us the real life and visited school. We also took bicycle for long way to other villages in this area, it was amazing and beautiful route.

Going to Ngoc son is like visiting jurassic park without the dinosaurs. The pristine hardly changed environment is superb. The way of life is as it probably has been for decades, maybe even cwnturies (exlude the electricity). Beautiful rice paddies, water buffalos, pigs, corn, herbs and spices within reach. Beautiful waterfall and interesting trek as well. Not too daring or scary but also not a walk in the park.
Experience was enhanced by having a private guide that expalined various things about way of living, history, and so on.

We had a great experience in Ngoc Son and Ngo Luong Reserve with Ethnic Voyage, we loved the way that the Thai and Muong Ethnic Minorities lived here in harmony with virgin nature

I highly recomend getting out of the busy cities to experience true nature. Booked a 2 day 1 night trip with handspan travel. Got picked up at our hotel by our tourist guide and a chauffeur. From hanoi it tokk around 4 hours to get to our starting point. From there it was pure bliss (and a bit of hard work walking!). We slept at a homestay, where we were very warmly welcomed by the host. It was quite cold (read: uncontrollable shivers) so be sure to bring an extra jacket, its cold in the mountains! The next day we trekked along, until we ended up at another homestay where we had lunch, and rhen got on motorcycles to get back to starting point. I think it is important to step away from tourism and cities and experience and support the locals.
