Obviously someone has been paying attention to the negative reviews from the past, because we stopped at the café for the first time today, expecting average food at tourist prices (we were hungry!) and were blown away by the quality of our meals. We ordered from the takeaway menu, which is quite a bit less expensive than sitting in the restaurant, but we hadn't wanted fries and whatever extras come with them anyway. My grilled barramundi sandwich was among the best fish sandwiches I've ever had anywhere. Fish was tender, generous portion and full of flavour without being fishy. Perfect with tartare sauce and greens in a seeded ciabatta bun. It was a large sandwich but I finished it because it was so good. My husband got the chicken Caesar salad and loved his just as much.

The view is worth a stop and the lady at the information centre was helpful and friendly.

We moved to the Illawarra region a few months ago and pass by the centre on the way to Sydney fairly often. It had never occurred to us to stop before, but I am looking forward to our next meal there!

Have driven past this impressive-looking building sitting on the edge of the Illawarra escarpment a least a hundreds times before finally stopping in for a break and a bit of lunch. It was a sunny day with clear skies and the views up and down the coastline were just jaw-dropping. Had lunch here - in the cafe, not the restaurant. Menu is pretty standard cafe though meals presented in interesting ways, and with prices quite reasonable. Liked the way the burgers were presented on various breads, not just cheap buns. We were happy with what we ordered, though I am pretty sure the fish in my 'Barra Burger' was not barramundi. (Not to worry, there was plenty of fish and it still tasted good.) Coffee OK without being brilliant. The adjoining Wollongong Visitor info centre is excellent, well stocked with tourist information for the entire South Coast, not just the 'Gong. Free wifi too that you can also pick up in the cafe. The place is simple to access when driving from the north; not sure if it is possible to access if travelling from the south.

Disgusting filthy place. The staff had no idea. They were wearing yard clothes, the chef put hands in salad, ate some and put hands back in the dish. No gloves on. Menu and table dirty. Order incorrect. Waitress put glasses on table with her hand touching the rim? Yuk, The Greek salad was cucumber and tomato, no lettuce, no feta? One olive. We are casual friends and not too precious, just wanted a simple lunch but this was the worst restaurant we have ever been to. coffee luke warm. Great views but gee take a picnic if you go. Should be shut down. Health inspection urgently recommended.

We are locals and decided to get up into the escarpment on a very hot afternoon last week for some fresh air. We visited the Gateway Centre right on top of the escarpment (Bulli Tops) The wraparound balcony captures the magnificent view over the beaches from Austinmer to way down the south coast. The breeze was gently blowing and it was noticeably cooler up there.

We arrived just after 2pm to be told the kitchen was closed but the very pleasant man made an exception when he saw our faces! We had cold glass of wine and the most delicious and freshly made wrap I've ever tasted.!

Inside is a pleasant restaurant and separate lounge area for casual dining.
A very pleasant experience!

Nothing there, only the view is interesting, over priced restaurant, nothing for the average family and hard to get to if you miss the turn coming from Campbelltown direction. Another waste of ratepayers money, bought to you by Wollongong City Council.

The view here is spectacur and reason alone to visit.

The information centre was helpful and we found the amenities to be clean.

We had morning tea at the Altitude cafe and were the only customers at that point in time so service was prompt. Coffee and milkshakes were both very good. The white chairs in the cafe are rather dirty and need cleaned.

The Altitude cafe has an Indian twist to some of the meals (naan bread instead of toast in their big breakfast etc) which may not be to everyones taste.

Thank you David W for your review. Isn't the view just Spectacular! The morning light bouncing off of the ocean and along the cliffs is glorious. Altitude 1148 is an Indian/Modern Australian restaurant, that serve an amazing lunch and dinner menu. There is a second option for coffee and food at the Southern Gateway Centre, don't forget about the Gelato Emporium, not only do they serve a huge array of fresh gelato, but there are many pastry selections, wraps, toasted sandwiches, cakes, and the list goes on. Gelato Emporium can be found on the northern end of the Southern Gateway Centre.

A reasonably new facility with 180 degree views to ocean and the coastline. While I preferred the more old fashioned Sublime Point, this is probably more accessible for most people driving the Princes Motorway (M1) between Sydney and Wollongong. Also has the advantage of a staffed information centre plus modern cafe and gelato shop. Each lookout, there is also Bulli Lookout just up the road, gives similar stunning area views so only need to do one to take it all in.

Stopped by the Southern Gateway for a cup of coffee on our daytrip south. Amazing views from the lookout and vey good coffee in the Gelato Emporium. We checked out the tourist information centre where the staff were very pleasant and helpful. I found the facilities very good.

The Southern Gateway is well worth a stop to checkout the view and for coffee.

There was a sign in the toilet facilities to complain to Wollongong Council if you had problems with the facilities.

We loved the view from the centre! It was serene. Information centre is very nice. I think they should add more varieties of souvenirs to purchase/collect.

Farhida – Thank you for visiting the Wollongong Information Centre at the Southern Gateway Centre. We are always on the lookout for new souvenirs and try to maintain stocking local and interesting products. We will definitely endeavour to grow our Souvenir Range in the coming months. We love our view from the Information Centre, we can check the tides and the weather down the south coast just by looking out the window. So glad you had the chance to enjoy it as well. -Visitor Services Specialist
