Went during easter with my family, great value place to visit, the guides in the shop were incredibly helpful and knowledgeable, the gardens were lovely and the house very very interesting. I would most definitely visit again even if just to walk the dogs.

Owned by English Heritage the castle adjoins the newer Belsay Hall (see separate review) and is included in the entrance price. It is reached by a walk through a garden from the hall. It's certainly not suitable for those with accessibility issues but is set in stunning grounds and from the ramparts offers great views.

Super location to explore on a nice day. Lots to see, rarely gets too crowded, plenty of interest for history buffs and a nice coffee shop at the end. Recommended by me, a visitor on many occasions.

We walked through the extensive and glorious gardens from the Hall (reviewed separately) to find this impressive castle. Although there weren't many information notices around, it was well worth the exploration. It doesn't take a great deal of imagination to visualise what this place might have looked like at various times of it' history. There was a place to get... More

Visited here on our route home from Scotland. Had a really nice day. It was 3 attractions in one a hall ,castle, and beautiful gardens. The hall is not furnished at all but with imagination you could visualise what it would be like. The gardens are beautiful and well maintained. The castle is a walk through the gardens it also... The house is devoid of all the trappings due to it being given over the nation on the understanding it wasn't to be refurbished, just kept from deteriorating! Outside is a garden and the original castle which is got to through what looks like a quarry which was used to make the house. It has become planted and and in... More

Even in October the gardens are lovely. Very atmospheric, with quarry area and lots of shade loving plants. There are two routes ,one more suitable for disabled or if you just want a shorter route. Both lead to the castle which is magnificent. A climb to the top,up steep uneven steps, is well worth the effort as the views are amazing.

A wonderful atmospheric place with so much to enjoy. The house is modern enough to visualise people living there and the layout of the rooms, designed by the owner for his own comfort, is unusual and interesting. The castle is a ruin but so beautiful and the gardens are amazing. Go one a sunny day and it's like Journey to... More
