If you want a walk in the forest with some beautiful views & a waterfall at the end then find time to do this. It’s steep in some places so make sure you have the correct shoes on. Takes about 40 minutes round trip but there is a picnic area at the top.

If you have time at Lake Como to explore beyond the must-see items, then this is a lovely and relatively easy walk. The Fiumelatte river is a local curiosity on 3 counts. Firstly, it springs out of a small cave in the mountain and you can climb up to see its actual source (‘sorgente’). Secondly its name means ‘river of milk’ and refers to its foaming, frothing milky colour, caused by the speed at which it gushes down the mountain to the lake. Lastly it is only 250m long so it qualifies as Italy’s shortest river.
GETTING THERE: To get there, start in Varenna at the Villa Monastero and head up towards the cemetery. Climb the metal staircase to join the Sentiero del Viandante walking trail. The path is not always clearly marked. Look out for a junction with a sign post. If you look carefully enough, you will spot a rock at the bottom of the post with a painted arrow pointing straight ahead to Fiumelatte - it is very easily missed! (See photo). When the trail peters out at the river, make sure you walk the extra 5 minutes up the mountain to see the river’s source. There is a viewing platform so you can watch the water spraying and streaming out.
WARNING: Don't take the Greenway path from Varenna because it has completely collapsed completely just before Fiumelatte and is impassable (see photo).

This is a level walk from the town square. We saw it in medium flood. Sometimes it it runs dry and sometimes is in full flood. Just about worth the walk but it was a very nice walk.
The walk takes you alongside the gardens of Villa Monastero and you get a really good view so unless you are a real botanist this walk also doubles up as a garden walk!

If you enjoy getting away from the crowds and getting some exercise this is great option. Not Alan easy hike yet not highly difficult or long either. There is a pretty steep ascent and some tricky footing along the way. You also need to pay close attention to the sign posts as they are not alwaYs highly visible. A map is suggested. I understand that the waters are not always running but we were lucky to have visited at a great time. The velocity is amazing. There is a picnic area by the river. Would be a good time to hike and dine!

It’s a 15 min climb up to the source. The air spray was wonderful and refreshing in a hot sunny day. At the bottom there is a small parking and a restaurant Hosteria Plantano which we was recommended to us but we are vegetarians and did not find much variety for all of us
